Happy and proud to share that the last paper from my dissertation, “White-tailed deer population dynamics in a multi-predator landscape shaped by humans,” is published in @ESAApplications 🦌🐺🌲👩🌾
Reach out if you’d like a copy, and follow along for a 🧵

Had a great conversation with @BloodOriginsCan about our latest study on white-tailed deer from the #WAPredatorPreyProject. Tune in to their newest podcast episode to hear all about it!

Happy to share our new paper out today!! 🦌🔥🌳
We investigate the plasticity of deer movement and behavior following a major megafire in Northern California @HoplandREC. TL;DR : Deer can adjust their behaviors to keep up with a rapidly changing landscape!

We just released the model to extract snow depth from snow pole images! 🥳Paper: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.… . Big big thank you to my fellow coauthors @LauraPrugh, Carrie Vuyovich @space_potato, Ryan Currier @wcurrier, & Zhongqi Miao, as well as @NASAGoddard @cv4ecology
Another exciting new paper form @S_Bassing !

Latest pub from my dissertation out now in @ESAEcosphere! As #wildfire size distributions shift, we ask how burn severity patterns (& #ecological effects) might differ if an area is burned in many small 🔥 vs few large 🔥.
Great summary by @NW_CASC here: bit.ly/45T8fEL
#WAPredatorPreyProject research in the @SpokesmanReview! Study: Food availability more important than predators for white-tailed deer in northeast Washington (and predators are important too!) spokesman.com/stories/2024/j…
Nice blurb from @ESA_org @ESAApplications summarizing our new #WAPredatorPreyProject paper on white-tailed deer! 🦌
Our latest media tip sheet covers recent research from @ESAApplications, @ESAEcosphere & @ESAFrontiers, including:
🌲The potential for pines in Alaska
🦌Washington's white-tailed deer
🐝Honey bees: overwinter disease reservoir
🦜Crowdsourcing bird records

Habitat was the MOST important influence on the deer population growth rate. Recently (< 20 yrs) logged forests had 55% more biomass of understory plants (deer food), leading to higher deer survival. If the habitat for deer improves, their population should increase. (3/9)
Huge thanks to our #WAPredatorPreyProject team, including our field crews who captured 400+ animals, conducted 250+ habitat surveys and dissected 100+ deer. Thanks to local landowners who provided property access, and generous funders like @RMEF. (8/9)
My co-authors @LauraPrugh, @S_Bassing, @LabGardner, Aaron Wirsing, and Lauren Satterfield of @UW_SEFS, Melia DeVivo, Brian Kertson, and Ben Turnock of @WDFW, Lisa Shipley (WSU), and Savanah Walker and Derek Abrahamson (Spokane Tribe) added so much value to this work. 🙏 (9/9)
We collared 280 deer, 33 bobcats, 50 cougars, 28 coyotes, and 14 wolves in NE WA (2016-2021), tracking their survival, reproduction, and movement. The deer population was stable to slightly declining over the study period, but what drove this trend? (2/9)

🚨 New open access publication! 🚨 doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4873 (🧵 below)
So excited to see this in press - just in time to cite in a synthesis on how ungulates respond to recreation!
Our paper just published in @CurrentBiology with a great team incl @MDitmer @BarberLab @freaklabs

Wildlife likely hear us more than they see us but how are they responding to the noise we generate while recreating?
