Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa had a petulant response on Thursday when asked about Trumpās warning that he would step in to keep the southern border secure if she tries to reopen it.
Instead of thanking Trump for securing the border and committing to keep it that way, Hinojosa said: āYou cannot tell me what to do in my state. I am a Democratic governor, and I know what is best for my people.ā
Notice she didnāt say American people. Hinojosa was born in McAllen. Her mother, Crisanta Guerra Lozano, was born in San Luis PotosĆ, Mexico, later emigrated to the U.S., and became a naturalized citizen. Thereās no public record detailing exactly how or when her family entered. Hinojosa should still be transparent about it. Her familyās path is relevant to how she intends to govern a border state.
Whether she likes it or not, Hinojosa will be responsible for any American hurt or killed by an illegal alien who crosses into Texas on her watch. If she canāt commit to keeping her section of the border secure, sheās not competent to serve as governor and shouldnāt take the oath.
Trump already said heāll enforce the border himself if she wonāt. Texans shouldnāt have to rely on that. The job is to keep the border closed, not pick a fight with the president over basic security.
