Massachusetts’ housing permitting system puts everyone in a bad position. Planning boards, staff, neighbors, and developers are often responding rationally to a system that fosters uncertainty, rewards delay, and makes housing more expensive. My new @BosIndicators report, “Delayed by Design,” looks at why.

I’d love to see someone in Boston sports media take a bold stand and criticize Robert Kraft for censoring Macklemore and creating a culture of fear in the process. But they won’t. Everyone is so afraid to touch it.

Republican governors in Texas, Florida, Montana and Vermont have all backed efforts to make it easier to build more housing by reducing zoning, land-use or permitting barriers. Meanwhile, Massachusetts GOP candidate Mike Minogue wants to go in the opposite direction, repealing MBTA Communities, one of the state’s biggest zoning reform efforts in recent memory, while offering faster permitting for single-family homes only and incentives to eliminate stretch codes (which I agree are problematic). At a time when Republicans in other states are embracing housing production, Minogue’s signature proposal would roll back one of Massachusetts’ most consequential housing reforms.
The Massachusetts governor's race is turning towards November — with a long-awaited policy rollout from the Republican challenger and a quartet of police union endorsements for the incumbent Democrat

On its third attempt tonight, Marblehead Town Meeting approved an “MBTA Communities–compliant” district largely centered on the 125-year-old Tedesco Country Club, meeting 3A requirements on paper while all but assuring no new housing would be built. This comment says it all.

Remember when Google dropped this Black History Month commercial in 2020? That’s what honoring Black history looks like, telling the truth loudly, not sanitizing it when it makes people uncomfortable. Happy Black History Month.

I’m a hell no — not a penny more for ICE. We should not fund this terror.
Reminder: DHS legislation that funds ICE at current levels without policy restrictions is in the Senate and needs 60 votes to pass. Deadline is next Friday.

Americans are being killed in the street by their government. Our Constitution is being shredded and our rights are dissolving. Resist. Senate Dems should block ICE funding this week. Activate the National Guard. We can and must stop this.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

Heather McGhee warned us about "zero-sum" politics in "The Sum of Us." And we're seeing it play it now: when we start trying to win at other peoples' expense, everyday people lose, no matter what side of the aisle they're on. So let's flip the script.
