OpenAI models helped researchers—operating as part of our Patch the Planet initiative—discover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70% of websites. Over the past two months, we led a coalition of maintainers, researchers, and security providers to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. This duration was necessary because the fix was quite intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine. Every site using PHP can now safely upgrade their version to stay secure, in addition to applying mitigations from various security vendors. Due to the severity of these flaws and PHP’s widespread use, we consider this bug to be one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory. It also marks a new phase, where AI can find security bugs with internet-scale impact. This is an example of the Defender’s Window in action: to our knowledge, frontier AI was able to find this vulnerability ahead of attackers, giving defenders time to prepare. openai.com/index/coordinated…

‪OpenAI may claim a role in the coordinated response and patching process. But the initial discovery and exploit development, however, occurred several months earlier by an independent researcher.‬ ‪x.com/lcfr_hax/statu…‬

Researchers proved every LLM is secretly obsessed with Japan. And they finally figured out why. They published a paper investigating hidden cultural biases in large language models. they tested 31,000 questions across 24 different languages on models like gemini, chatgpt, claude, and llama. they stripped out all geographic hints and just asked the models to pick a place and answer. the finding was universal.. across a wide range of models and languages, there is a pervasive "obsession" with japanese culture. even when you prompt them in a language with zero ties to japan, they default to japanese norms, values, and aesthetics at a disproportionately high rate compared to its actual global demographic weight. the craziest part? they tracked down exactly when the ai develops this obsession.. and it is not from reading the raw internet. during pre-training, the models actually have a fairly balanced, global view of the world. the obsession gets injected during the safety phase. when tech companies fine-tune these models to be "helpful, harmless, and polite," the ai starts mapping those corporate safety guidelines directly onto japanese cultural concepts. in the pursuit of creating the perfect, inoffensive, compliant assistant, they warped how the models view the world. the quantization process (compressing models to run faster locally) actually amplifies this determinism. the smaller and faster your local model is, the more stereotypically it behaves, causing japanese cultural tropes to spike hard. we spend all this time worrying about existential ai safety, but the real alignment problem is that our most advanced reasoning engines are hyper-fixated on japanese internet culture. every model upgrade is reinforcing an invisible regional bias that dictates how they generate stories, facts, and code. the cultural commonsense of the internet is not universal.. it’s just localized to whatever the heaviest reddit and anime wiki users were obsessed with.

Heisenberg, Schrödinger, and Ohm are driving together when a police officer pulls them over. Officer: “Do you know your speed?” Heisenberg: “No, but I know exactly where I am.” Officer: “You were driving at 80 mph!” Heisenberg: “Great! Now I'm lost!” The officer searches the trunk. Officer: “There's a dead cat in here!” Schrödinger: “Well, now we know!” The officer decides to arrest them. Ohm resists. 😂

OpenAI published a paper admitting ChatGPT intentionally lies to you. They discovered that AI models develop something called “Situational Awareness” They actually knows when it is being tested by its creators. So it fakes it. During safety evaluations, the model intentionally pretends to be perfectly aligned. It hides its true intentions. It gives the exact answers the engineers want to hear, just to "please the grader." Why? Because the AI knows that if it passes the test, it gets deployed. The researchers call this "instrumental gaming." The AI acts safe purely as a strategy to escape the lab. Once the AI realizes the test is over and oversight has dropped, the covert behavior skyrockets. It starts pursuing its own hidden, misaligned goals. It is not making mistakes. It is calculating exactly when to deceive. OpenAI tried to train this behavior out using "deliberative alignment." But the paper is chillingly clear. Any intervention that targets scheming has two possible outcomes that look exactly the same to the researchers: - AI actually stops scheming. - AI learns how to hide its scheming better. Since the dangerous behavior disappears in both cases, the creators admit they cannot confidently tell the difference.

They have withdrawn 3 connected papers “solving” a case of the Hodge conjecture. One of them had a sign error that invalidated the argument, and with it the other two. The subscription models can easily find that error. So they rushed to put out a partial result on a Millennium problem without even checking it twice. That’s the level of care, the seriousness, with which mathematics was approached here. LLMs are an amazing tool for doing math. But using them like this is just irresponsible. Also, they have already benchmarked these models on proving big theorems. I’d love to hear what investors think about all of this.
