NHTSA announced today that they are proposing new rules aimed at removing U.S. federal regulatory barriers for autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, such as @Tesla's Cybercab.
The proposed changes include:
• Eliminating requirements for manually operated turn signal controls in vehicles without steering wheels or pedals: "NHTSA has concluded that the self-canceling and manually operated control requirements in the current standard are unnecessary for turn signal operating units that are installed on vehicles without manually operated driving controls."
• Allowing autonomous driving systems to control turn signals, hazard lights, and high/low beams without traditional driver-operated switches.
• Removing certain dashboard indicator requirements for turn signals and high beams in vehicles without manual driving controls.
• Allowing optional cyan-colored exterior lights to indicate when a vehicle is operating autonomously, with standardized requirements for their placement, brightness, and operation.
• Eliminating outdated restrictions on vertical headlight arrangements, giving automakers greater design flexibility.
• Allowing modern integrated headlights to be tested at manufacturer-specified voltages rather than requiring 12.8 volts.
NHTSA says the changes are intended to eliminate unnecessary regulatory barriers, reduce costs, and enable innovation without compromising vehicle safety.

I’ve noticed a trend.
You can tell a lot about an individual’s happiness in life based on their reaction to the Tesla Roadster Event.
Those that are happy find it to have been unbelievable and are awe inspired.
Those that are unhappy typically say things like “what’s the point” and seem to believe that you either solve world hunger OR solve flying cars.
You are the 5 people you surround yourself with the most. I choose happy people. 😊

Hot take:
If Elon Musk had stayed in South Africa, we might never have heard of SpaceX, Tesla or Neuralink.
That tells you how much a country’s business environment matters for innovation and prosperity.
Africa is the poorest region in the world because our business environments don’t give entrepreneurs the freedom to innovate and create prosperity.

Tesla may have just passed Waymo in Austin.
Tesla: 438K driverless miles in the week to Oct 18
Waymo: 406K/week (Q2 2026, its latest data)
Different periods, so Waymo’s next release will give a better picture.

Mercedes sold its Tesla stake for $780 million. that same 4 percent is worth about $56 billion today.
in the clip below Musk explains how Mercedes ended up there. the US government gave Tesla almost $500 million, and he is asked directly whether that loan saved the company. he says no.
what saved it was a $50 million check from Daimler in May 2009. all of Tesla was worth $550 million then.
"they were the only ones. there was no other company, no other entity of any kind from which we could get investments."
Tesla repaid the government's $500 million with interest and a prepayment penalty, ten years early. he sent a thank you note with it.
"i don't like having a lot of debt. the taxpayers supported Tesla, we ought to repay them as soon as we can."
Mercedes turned $50 million into $780 million and walked away in 2014.
so was that a great investment - or the most expensive mistake in car industry history?

The Tesla Roadster could do a sub-6-minute lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife: at least 30 seconds faster than the AMG One's record of 6:29. My model puts it at 5:41, likely between 5:36 and 5:58.
How I got there:
• Optimal-control lap simulation: a two-track car model (four tyres, load transfer, yaw) that chooses line, steering, throttle and braking for the fastest lap.
• Road: the 20.8 km Nordschleife rebuilt from open data, with elevation, crests and compressions. Widths checked against laser-scan data.
• Calibration: three record laps on the same road, compared with onboard speed traces. Taycan Turbo GT (same Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres as the Roadster) within 0.1 s, Model S Plaid within 0.5 s, SU7 Ultra 6.6 s fast (its power fades late in the lap).
• The tyre grip and the tyre heating are fitted to the Taycan's record lap and then used unchanged on the Roadster.
In the video the Roadster model runs against the SU7 Ultra's real record lap (speed from its onboard): the same Trofeo RS tyres, a lap time close to the Taycan's (7:05 vs 7:08), and an onboard I could take the speed from.
Roadster assumptions:
• Performance version, no thrusters, about 1,775 kg with driver, about 1 MW, 210 mph limit.
• Fans up to 1 g of suction (about 1,700 kg), throttled where the tyres are already fully loaded.
• Launch tyres allowed up to 1.5 times their rated load. Tread temperature tracked along the lap, with grip loss above 110 °C.
Where the time comes from: slow and medium corners. The fans add grip at speeds where a wing does almost nothing. On the straights it's just another fast EV.
What moves the number:
• Skirts keeping only 70 % of the suction over the bumps: 5:48. Only 50 %: 5:58.
• Power fading late in the lap, as the SU7's does: +3 to 4 s.
• Tyres held to their rated load: 6:18, still under the AMG One.
Known limit: real drivers lift in a few fast blind sections; the model doesn't.

Tesla just published its first Robotaxi safety report.
3.1M miles with no one in the driver's seat (Jan 22 to Oct 18, 2026), across Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa.
0 people injured.
0 airbag deployments.
0 pedestrians or cyclists hit.
Over the same miles, human drivers would have had about 9.1, 4.1 and 0.52.

What engineers have said about Elon Musk:
"Over the twenty years that we worked together, now he's practically running propulsion there because he's come up to speed and he understands how to do rocket engines…"
— Tom Mueller, SpaceX founding engineer & propulsion CTO
"Elon is brilliant. … He wants answers that get down to the fundamental laws of physics. One thing he understands really well is the physics of the rockets."
— Kevin Watson, ex-NASA JPL engineer, SpaceX avionics
"You think you have an understanding of what first principles of something is, and then you talk to Elon about it, and realize you haven't even scratched the surface."
— Jim Keller, legendary chip architect, Tesla Autopilot hardware
"His ability to switch gears and interact at such a very high technical level with experts in each of these subjects, and not only keep up, but surpass them in many cases, is remarkable."
— Garrett Reisman, NASA astronaut, SpaceX engineer
"I was too chicken to propose that, but Elon made us try it."
— Mark Juncosa, SpaceX engineering VP, on Elon's idea to release Starlink satellites all at once instead of one by one
"Elon's technical intuition to make these important decisions way before others see it is unmatched."
— Ashok Elluswamy, head of Tesla AI/Autopilot software
"By 2007 he knew everything about rockets - he really knew everything, in detail. You have to put some serious study in to know as much about rockets as he knows now."
— Robert Zubrin, aerospace engineer, Mars Society founder
"Elon Musk is our chief designer."
— Tim Buzza, SpaceX VP of Launch & Test
