A DISASTER DEADLIER THAN THE TITANIC. THOUSANDS DIED IN JUST FOUR MINUTES.
One of the deadliest maritime disasters in history remains largely forgotten outside the former Soviet Union.
On November 7, 1941, the Soviet hospital transport Armenia was sailing through the Black Sea, evacuating wounded soldiers, medical personnel, and civilians from Crimea.
German forces were advancing across the peninsula, and thousands of desperate people were trying to escape.
The Armenia, originally designed to carry fewer than 1,000 passengers, was reportedly packed with several thousand evacuees.
Near Yalta, German aircraft attacked.
The ship was struck and sank with terrifying speed. Some accounts suggest she disappeared beneath the waves in just four minutes!
Estimates commonly place the death toll between 5,000 and 7,000, although the exact number will never be known.
Only a handful reportedly survived.
For decades, the Armenia's destruction was generally attributed to torpedoes launched by a German Heinkel He 111. But when researchers discovered the wreck in 2020, lying approximately 1,500 meters beneath the Black Sea, the evidence pointed instead toward aerial bombing.
The tragedy had remained hidden beneath the waves for almost eighty years.
The loss of the Armenia ranks among the deadliest single-ship disasters of World War II, exceeding even the death toll of the Titanic several times over.
Yet remarkably few people outside Eastern Europe know her story.

💥A man beneath a transparent dome. A torpedo beneath his feet. One of these tiny German weapons would end a Polish cruiser’s war.
In 1944, the Kriegsmarine sent one-man torpedo carriers against Allied shipping off Normandy.
The Neger consisted of two torpedo bodies mounted one above the other. The upper one carried the operator in a cramped cockpit. The lower one carried the explosive warhead.
Approach the target. Release the torpedo. Find a way home. That last part was never guaranteed.
The Neger could not dive. Its dome remained above the surface, and waves washing over it could obscure the pilot’s view. The later Marder added a limited diving capability.
The sailor featured in this footage is 23-year-old Walter Gerhold, who received the Knight’s Cross after a July attack against the invasion fleet. German newsreels celebrated him as the man who had sunk an enemy cruiser.
On July 8, 1944, the Polish light cruiser ORP Dragon was struck off Normandy by a torpedo fired from a Neger. The attack is generally attributed to another operator, Karl-Heinz Potthast.
Thirty-seven members of Dragon’s crew were killed.
The cruiser had supported the Allied landings with her guns. Now her damage was so extensive that returning her to combat was judged impractical. On July 20, she was deliberately sunk off Courseulles-sur-Mer to reinforce Gooseberry 4, the breakwater protecting shipping off Juno Beach.

U leest daar ook alles over betalingsonmacht, want dan kunt u in principe niet gegijzeld worden. Dat wordt wel een hellend vlak. Want als u doorgaat met het leven van andere weggebruikers in gevaar te brengen, zal de kantonrechter sneller geneigd zijn uw gijzeling ook goed te keuren als u stapels boetes niet kunt betalen omdat u het opzettelijk laat oplopen. Het juridisch geitenpaadje is dan dat u opeenvolgend zeven dagen kan worden gegijzeld voor het niet betalen van één boete. Immers bijna niemand kan spreken over betalingsonmacht in het geval van één boete.

Dat klopt van geen kant. 9% van de huishoudens zit volgens het CBS in geregistreerde problematische schulden, dan ligt er vaak beslag en zitten ze onder bijstandsniveau.

🇫🇷 This man is a hero.
He had earned his captain’s rank. His German captors saw only the color of his skin.
On June 7, 1940, following fierce fighting, after his men exhausted their ammunition, Captain Charles N’Tchoréré was captured at Airaines, northern France.
Born in Libreville, Gabon, in 1896, he had served during World War I, become a career soldier, and risen through the ranks. Promoted to captain in 1933, he volunteered for frontline service when another war began.
In June 1940, he commanded a company of the 53rd Mixed Senegalese Colonial Infantry Regiment. At Airaines, he stayed behind to cover his battalion’s withdrawal.
When resistance finally became impossible, he emerged with roughly fifteen men still fit to fight. The Germans separated African prisoners from Europeans. N’Tchoréré insisted on being treated as a French officer, invoking the Geneva Convention.
He was shot in the back of the neck. He was 43.
Several accounts attribute his murder to soldiers of Germany’s 25th Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Motorized Infantry Division.
His murder exposes a reality often overshadowed by accounts of tanks and battlefield maneuvers: the campaign of 1940 also included racist killings of captured African soldiers.

Democrat Nancy Lacore, a 35-year Navy veteran who rose through the ranks from helicopter pilot to become Chief of Navy Reserve, was fired in August of 2025 amid Hegseth's purging of high-ranking women in the military. While no official reason was given, the deeply misogynistic Hegseth has not been coy about his caveman belief that only testosterone-injecting men should serve.
Lacore has now defeated Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt to seize a seat that was formerly held by MAGA lunatic Nancy Mace who launched a failed bid for the governor's mansion this year.
Lacore has not been shy about criticizing Hegseth's disastrous mismanagement of the Defense Department, particularly his failed Iran War.
"Pete Hegseth is the most unqualified Secretary of Defense that we have ever had, and he is doing significant damage to our military that it will really take decades to undo," she said, adding that he "needs to go."
The most beautiful irony here? Congresswoman Lacore could soon be voting with the rest of the Democratic majority in the House to impeach Pete Hegseth. We have subpoena power starting in January, so we'll be able to uncover all of the gross negligence and rampant criminality that he's overseen.

Je hebt politieke katers in soorten. Dit is er eentje waarbij de bonkende hoofdpijn nog wel even zal aanhouden .
Durven de republikeinen kritisch zelfonderzoek aan? De voor democraten zo gunstige zetelverdeling vertelt maar een deel van het verhaal. Het is altijd interessant om te kijken naar de popular vote, het precieze aantal stemmen dat kandidaten van beide partijen binnenhaalden. Dan staan de democraten 11% voor en dat is héél veel. Sinds 1914 is dat maar één keer eerder zo hoog geweest. De democraten haalden 62 miljoen stemmen, republikeinen 49 miljoen.
Dat doet pijn.
De opkomst was ook bijna record-hoog. Dat zegt iets over het enthousiasme van de kiezers. President Trump heeft er alles aan gedaan door allerlei beperkende regels de opkomst juist te drukken, omdat hij ervan uitgaat dat republikeinen profiteren van een lágere opkomst. Mislukt dus, Mr. president!
De partij heeft zich zo laten knevelen door de politieke dwangbuis van Donald Trump dat ze zijn gaan nadenken over plannen die blijvend grotere groepen kiezers kunnen aantrekken. De altijd zo opgewekte partij (Ronald Reagan prees The Good Old USA als 'a shining city on the hill') werd de Trump-partij van boosheid en frustratie. Dat pessimisme is erg on-Amerikaans.
Bijna 20 jaar geleden deed de republikeinse partij wel aan zelfonderzoek in wat de geschiedenis in is gegaan als het “Autopsy Report”.
De partij was zich in 2012 rot geschrokken dat het ze niet gelukt was om Barack Obama van een tweede presidentiële termijn af te houden.
Het politieke lijk werd opengesneden maar met wat de republikeinse pathologen aantroffen is vervolgens niks gedaan. Want niet lang daarna verscheen Donald Trump op het politieke toneel die weliswaar snel heel populair werd, maar door zijn allesoverheersende rol in de partij elke vorm van discussie of ideeën-ontwikkeling in de kiem heeft gesmoord. De partij bleek weliswaar niet dood, maar inhoudelijk wel in een peilloos diep coma te zijn gezakt. De electorale van dinsdag is er het resultaat van. Zetels verliezen in Maga-staten als Kansas en Texas is rampzalig. Partijruzies lijken onvermijdelijk. De eerste tekenen van een bloedige 'blame game' zijn er al.
Zo lang Donald Trump nog in het Witte Huis zit, lijkt er weinig kans dat zo’n kritisch zelfonderzoek er komt, want Trump weet zeker: het lag niet aan mij.
In een reactie op de desastreuze uitslag zei de president: “Ik was niet verkiesbaar. Als dat wel zo geweest zou zijn, zouden we gewonnen hebben. In een landslide'.
Dat is een wel erg zelfingenomen analyse waarvoor een beetje politieke lijkschouwer zich diep voor zou schamen.
