It’s probably 1,000x easier to assign @BoddleLearning @IXLLearning etc. to your elementary students than it is to administer Direct Instruction.
That doesn’t mean you should.

The vertical whiteboards and "productive buzz" of Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) are sweeping through schools, but engagement is not achievement. Experts like @rastokke , @MrZachG , and @greg_ashman are sounding the alarm that we are trading mathematical mastery for a classroom aesthetic.
The shift toward "de-fronting" the classroom often ignores Cognitive Load Theory, leaving novice learners to flounder in unproductive struggle while major publishers drive implementation ahead of the scientific evidence. Success breeds engagement, not the other way around. If we want students to love math, we must ensure they are actually competent at it.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again.
An anti-technology wave is coming to public education.
And in my opinion, it can’t come soon enough.

I have to laugh at comments about explicit teaching being “easier” and inquiry being the more “elevated” teaching method. Setting aside the fact you have to get kids to pay attention and responding to EVERY signal, explicit teaching means you can’t just assign stuff anymore!

Classroom management is the foundation of teaching K-12.
No curriculum or teaching method will work if the teacher can’t manage the class.
Teacher colleague: I have an idea for my students this year. You might think I’m crazy, but I’m going to defront my classroom.
Me: What does defronting mean?
She basically summarized Building Thinking Classrooms.
Crazy is not the word, but close.

While high-quality instructional materials and sample
lessons can lay a strong foundation for learning, a teacher’s skill in adapting and delivering these lessons in a responsive and dynamic manner drives student learning and engagement.
I’ve sat through IEPs where Child A’s name was on the IEP for Child B.
Replying to @JamesAFurey
I sat through so many IEPs as a principal where the goals for child A were the exact same as the goals for child B.
Special Ed is extremely broken.

I think you're seriously underestimating the academic impact that comes with letting your colors shine

BREAKING: MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying.
Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt.
Here's what 4 months of data revealed:
(hint: we've been measuring productivity all wrong)

Does Explicit Instruction work for students with learning difficulties? A new study has some interesting findings⬇️🧵
Bizarre story about the lack of self-awareness some teachers have. A white teacher challenges his colleagues’ decision to skip the n-word in TKAM, then reads it aloud to his class anyway.
Also, he teaches Spanish, so I’m not sure why he is commenting on ELA teaching practices.

If this is your argument against direct instruction, you don’t have much of an argument. This is low hanging fruit at best.

This is the equivalent of the cartoon about the different animals lined up to take a flying test. These cartoons are cute and tug at the heart strings but do little to actually make a real point. Low hanging fruit doesn’t solve problems.
