The proposed immigration rule changes to ILR are deeply unfair and completely indefensible. Even if they come from my own party, I will always stand by principle and raise the concerns of communities over tribal politics. These changes could affect hundreds of thousands of families already living and working legally in the UK. An IPPR report suggests that up to 300,000 children may be impacted by these proposals. UNISON has warned that this migration shake-up risks creating a Windrush style scandal. Expecting people to remain with the same employer for 10 or even 15 years in order to qualify for ILR risks creating conditions that may be seen as modern slavery. At the same time, offering ILR after three years to high earners while requiring up to 15 years for lower earners is simply a class issue and must be called out at every level. Now that the consultation period has closed and decisions are approaching, I urge you to write to your MP, the Home Affairs Select Committee at [email protected] and the Home Secretary at [email protected] & [email protected] I have personally met hard working families in tears, uncertain about their future, paying all their annual savings in NHS surcharge fees, on top of taxes and NI at the normal rate. You may call this rebellious, but it is about standing up for those who risk being scapegoated in the name of border control, I have to speak from the heart. Border control should apply to new entrants, not to those who have already lived here lawfully for many years and built their lives in this country.

Thousands gathered in Lewisham today to celebrate Eid. Amid a disturbing rise in Islamophobia, my message to the community was clear: stand firm, challenge far-right hatred wherever you see it, and continue raising your voice for Palestine 🇵🇸 until peace and justice prevail in Gaza.
