A lot of dunking on this tweet (for good reason). But the counter point is that we don't live in a society in which there is perfect competition. We live in one with the illusion of it.
We should all be worried about "dynamic pricing." That's when companies change their prices in real time. If it's hot out, the cost of ice cream could go up. If it's cold, tea bags could go up. It's a way for giant companies to squeeze you even more.

On days like today I just ask myself the same question i always do: Do I think there will be more technology over the next 10 years or less? Then I just go look at the 10 year chart for VGT and close my trading app.

I know this referendum is probably more about gas prices, but it's good to feel, even if just for a short time, that the blatant corruption of this administration was rebuked and the general public is tired of it.

sad state of the world.

Populist agendas are simply a reflection of unhealthy market dynamics and should be treated as such (canaries) instead of shirked for quick dunks.

We broke the news last year that the 3 largest US airlines were quietly charging solo & business travelers higher fares. It caused a nationwide backlash, leading all but one (AA) to stop. This week, we collected and analyzed 5,000 fares on the nation's 5 largest airlines and found: -American charging solo flyers higher prices on 33.5% of flights -10.6% at United -0 on Delta, Alaska & Southwest Full story thriftytraveler.com/news/air…

Rent control isn't required if a city just builds properly. If you have a problem with rent control, but not a problem with supply constraints... you might be a real estate asshole who just wants to exploit an artificially restricted supply.
Graham offered his LA tenant $40,000 to move out, and the family making over $200,000/year said no and wanted $80,000… “I've seen people making a half a million dollars a year who get the same rent control treatment as the other person who's barely scraping by.”

Rent control is a dumb public policy reaction to already dumb public policy, but 95% of the airtime on it is by rich real estate people who just want to get more money, not by people who actually want to fix the system. That isn't capitalism and they aren't capitalists.

Rage against Prop 13. Rage against foreign investors using real estate as an asset class. Rage against the permitting process. Rage against NIMBY zoning laws. Rage against all those just has hard as you rage against rent control.

This is both a result of late stage capitalism and failed public policy. Anybody who points to just one or the other is being purposefully myopic.
I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time. We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s. We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN. For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee. In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it. Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further. nytimes.com/2026/10/25/nyreg…

This is late stage capitalism.
We are living in a time of great tension where we have flying cars and a resurgence of communism all at the same time. Truly incredible.

Not that I pretend to know when "late" is or that capitalism will "end", but the warning signs are there for people that are listening. There are parts of our society that aren't operating well and need fix (which almost all people agree on).

see normal people don’t understand that a 285 million dollar contract isn’t really that much because you have to pay taxes and also have to pay someone to play a gold harp as your personal chef prepares your dinner
Jaylen Brown says he bought a gold harp, and now has someone come over twice a week to play it as the sun goes down while his chef cooks dinner “My favorite purchase, I think my best, my most favorite purchase was, I bought a harp. I bought like a gold harp. I got it upstairs too…” “I got a harpist that come play like twice a week. While the sun is going down, chef is in the kitchen. You know what I mean? Just…”

I believe both of these are true: The taxes (base of earners and amounts) should be SO much higher in a thriving capitalism. The taxes currently collected are squandered at alarming rates (cronyism, industrial complex, fraud, waste, abuse).

Except for the war. If we are gonna get technical about it.
Trump: "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Trump's remarks were made the same day Russia conducted a drone strike killing six civilians including children in a Kharkiv region park, plus missile and energy infrastructure attacks leaving hundreds of thousands without power. kyivindependent.com/what-russias-d… kyivindependent.com/russian-drone-… kyivindependent.com/russia-strikes…

Another round of dunking across twitter bros is likely to happen because of this tweet. While i don't think grocery prices are a major concern (some cats are), the average consumer isn't being competed for in a true capitalistic sense as much as econ 101 tells us they are.
Hellmann's mayo McCormick spices Cholula hot sauce Frank's RedHot What do these products have in common? One company could soon control them all. I have concerns that McCormick and Unilever's $45 billion merger could increase YOUR grocery prices.

If you are ever wondering why Purdy puts up great stats but the analysts and media always seem a bit "meh" its really in this chart... The plays don't seem impressive (they are) because it doesn't feel like he's "making something out of nothing".
How often QBs have had Perfect Blocks (plays where everyone performs their assignment) and their EPA on those plays with perfect blocks
