How many South Africans know that the celebrated Afrikaans poet Ingrid Jonker is a direct descendant of the freed slaves, Jonker van Makassar and Rosetta van Bengalen?
Her father, Abraham Jonker was so ashamed about his mixed heritage that he did his level best to bury the secret.
He was head of South Africa's Publication Control Board that censored news that was inconvenient for the social engineers of apartheid.
Upon the publication of her book "Rook En Oker" he disowned her, saying: “You are a slut, get out of here. I don’t want to ever see you again.”
On receiving the news that she had drowned herself in the cold Atlantic Ocean on 19 July 1965, Jonker responded, "as far as I'm concerned throw her back in the sea!"
On his deathbed he cried out his daughter's name.
Apartheid was a torture chamber built by the Afrikaner for them and black South Africans.

South Africa is backwards in SO MANY WAYS. But one thing we’ve done well on is an individuals rights to their own body. Abortion, gender identity, what we wear, who we love, who we marry, what we call ourselves - we may not have electricity but we do have power. That’s huge!
