One of 27 swans wearing golden crowns, painted in tempera in 1400s on wooden ceiling of Sala dos Cisnes or Room of the Swans at the Palacio Nacional de Sintra near Lisbon, Portugal. Collared swan, medieval English heraldic symbol, references marriage in 1387 of Philippa of Lancaster to Portuguese monarch, King John. In 1380, symbol of “swan gorged and chained with a crown” was adopted by English royal House of Lancaster.

🇬🇧 In 18th-century London, dictionary-maker Samuel Johnson adored his cat Hodge. He personally bought oysters for him, rather than send his servants.
Today, a bronze statue of Hodge sits on a dictionary beside oyster shells outside Johnson’s former home in Gough Square.

“Behold this Mason with his plumb line in his hand.
For he ever took sufficient pains that his foundation sure would stand”.
Here lies George McClean, a builder, who died 29th March 1760 aged 67 years. He was so very proud of his plumb line that he holds it on his gravestone.
