Women Soul of the Nation
My mother called on women to become the soul of the nation. I hear in her words a call to bring conscience to the decisions that govern people’s lives.
I celebrate Deb Haaland, New Mexico’s first Native American governor-elect; Keisha Lance Bottoms of Georgia, the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state; and Gina Hinojosa, Texas’ first Latina governor-elect.
I’m thinking of the people who have spent years asking their leaders to hear them. I pray they see their lives and concerns reflected in the decisions you make. That is how the doors you opened can change what is possible for others.

I wish my mother could have seen Georgia last night.
When she called on women to become the soul of the nation, she was asking us to help shape what this country stands for and how it treats its people. She spent her life putting those words into action.
I thought of her as Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. I thought, too, of the Black women who went door to door, registered voters and organized for years. Many did not live to see what they helped make possible.
Congratulations, Governor-elect Bottoms. Congratulations also to Penny Brown Reynolds, Georgia’s next secretary of state, and Tanya Miller, our next attorney general.
I’m thinking of the Black girls who will grow up seeing women who look like them lead Georgia. I pray they see what my mother saw in leadership: the power to make life better for others and the responsibility to use it.

Roxie Roker made television history as Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, one of the first Black women shown as part of an ordinary interracial marriage on network TV.
What most viewers didn’t know was that she was already living that story.
Years earlier, she had married Sy Kravitz, a white Jewish television producer. They wed in 1962, when interracial couples still faced open hostility.
Their son, Lenny Kravitz, would grow up to become a rock star, but the early years were hard. Lenny has talked about people spitting at his parents in public and places that refused to welcome them.
Even Sy’s own parents struggled with the relationship—Roxie was both Black and not Jewish—and skipped the wedding.
Things shifted after Lenny was born. His grandparents met Roxie, got to know her, and eventually grew close to her. The two families that once stayed apart became connected through their grandson.
When Norman Lear offered Roxie the role of Helen Willis, he worried the interracial storyline might be too controversial for her. Instead of a long explanation, she reached into her purse and handed him a photo of her own wedding.
She had already been living the part for more than a decade.
As her granddaughter Zoë Kravitz has said, Roxie wasn’t trying to make a statement for its own sake.
She was simply telling the truth of her life. Sometimes the most powerful change on screen starts with someone who is already living it. ❤️

Black. Beautiful. Barbie. 🩷
Being one of the first Black women to have a Barbie made in my likeness will always mean so much to me. My skin, my braids, my smile... a little piece of me that other little girls could see themselves in. That’s something I’ll treasure forever.
I love these pictures, I love this song, and I LOVE being Barbie. The little girl in me is having the time of her life. 💕
Happy Halloween, my loves... pretty in pink, with a little history in the box. 🎀
