1/ My new book, Defying Tyrants: Following Jesus in a World of Christian Antichrists, is out today. It's a Bible-forward confrontation with Christian nationalism and the abuse of power in Jesus's name. In the book, I call it a "primal theological scream."

In his "State of the Force" speech today, Pete Hegseth managed to wedge in 2 notable Christian nationalist phrases: "appeal to heaven" & "putting on the full armor of God." Both of these represent a very dangerous & anti-democratic conflation of military service & religion. 1/

Wendell has bad news for anyone who has ever spoken of the Good Samaritan as if any such person ever existed, much less learned a lesson from the parable as if it were somehow biblical or intended to communicate any values or ideals whatsoever.
Talarico cites Jesus healing the sick and feeding the hungry as if those events definitely happened, then claims he’s acting on biblical grounds. His own pastor, Jim Rigby, has said he doesn’t believe the miracle stories describe supernatural events and treats the resurrection more like a poem than history. Another minister at the same church, Babs Miller, said there’s “no way of knowing if Jesus really existed” and that whether he existed “doesn’t really matter.” So which reading of Scripture is he actually using?

What happens when political disagreement becomes spiritual warfare? Michael E. Heyes joins Faithful Politics to talk about his new book, "Devils of Democracy", and America’s long history of turning political opponents into demons. We trace that story from abolition and the Civil War to the Satanic Panic, spiritual warfare, C. Peter Wagner, and the New Apostolic Reformation. It is a real world look at what happens when the people we disagree with stop being neighbors and start being treated as enemies of God. Watch here: youtu.be/sgo2FYtt_KU

Mike Johnson over B-roll of Trump: "It's not unlawful for crazy people to run for office. That's happened throughout the history of our country. Never at this level, and never the number of people who are so determined to rip the Constitution in half."

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

Labeling CT as having a “religious spirit” is the same Spiritual Warfare trope used by Wagner who said “the spirit of religion is an agent of Satan to prevent change and to maintain the status quo (in the church).” It’s priming for backlash against Christians outside their tribe.

I don't use these terms lightly: I do not believe that the United States has ever been closer to tipping over into outright autocracy -- with attendant varieties of kleptocracy, theocracy, & oligarchy as the interests that surround Trump like pilot fish claim their shares. 9/
