Here I am posing for my own Weekend Update joke on SNL in 1985. I am a farmer who has grown a small potato that looks like a big potato. And, according to Dennis Miller, I only want a hundred dollars for it.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Dolly Parton memory: her being incredibly nice and cool to EVERYONE when i was on SNL in 1988 as a featured player/apprentice writer and wrote a sketch for her and me that bombed at readthrough and she totally sold it as it bombed and was so kind about it and I never met her again but always wanted to thank her for being so cool and making me and everyone feel special. What an icon, and for so long. A person who emanated goodness, and of course, a brilliant songwriter and performer. Sending love to her family and friends. 💙

I was skeptical at first, but I really love what SNL UK is doing. So I wanted to know how the process of making SNL UK differs from its American counterpart and how much Lorne Michaels is actually involved, so I found all that out indiewire.com/features/inter…

Search is full of ads and wrong answers. Every other email is an ad. Prime Video charges you and shows ads. Paramount? Ads. Peacock? YouTube? Hulu? Ads followed by more ads. Netflix full of ads. Meta and X, every other thing is an ad. Pinterest is nothing but ads. AI is in everything. AI finishes sentences incorrectly and won’t stop. AI reads your email and search history to target you with more ads. Every time you open an app or visit a site there’s an update making it worse. In a hurry? First, click here to agree to terms you don’t have time to read and must accept. You need an account to do that. Change your temporary password. Enter your 2FA code. Check your email and enter that code. Now use a passkey. Your password is too simple to remember. Change it. No, not like that. Now log on. Enter your 2FA code. Check your email for a code… Welcome back! We’ve updated our terms of service and privacy policy (you have none). Subscribe to the site. Subscribe to Netflix. Subscribe to toilet paper. Subscribe to these groceries. Pay a membership fee for the right to subscribe then tip your driver who delivers the subscriptions your membership lets you subscribe to. Time to work? We’ve got to update your laptop and will slow down everything you do until you agree to update. But first, click here to agree. Update installed — your laptop’s broken now. It doesn’t matter, since your boss just replaced you with AI. Go to your phone to complain on social media. Wait, your phone needs an update so we can add more AI. Click here. Oh sorry, your phone can’t handle this update. Now it’s useless. Go get the newest phone. Here’s a text from a friend, an email, a voice mail they left three days ago but you didn’t see until now because of sync problems with the cloud. It’s their GoFundMe. Their MLM. Their Patreon. Never mind, you didn’t respond to their text within 9 minutes and now you’re no longer friends. They blocked you. Make new friends. Download this app to find people in your area. In your neighborhood. On your street. Two doors down from you. Do you know this person yet, we think you’d get along. You need an account to use this app. That username is taken. Enter a password. Allow the app to access your contacts, know your precise location, store your credit card details. Oops, sorry, we got hacked now all that info is available on the web. There’s a class action suit. You can join. It’ll take a decade to get your $3.73 share of the ten billion settlement. We’ll send it via PayPal or deposit it to your bank, just tell us those details. Oh no, another hack. That info is circulating now, too. Here’s a spam call, a spam email, a spam text. Why are you angry? Why are you talking about getting rid of your phone? Why don’t you like AI, it lets us make all of this easier? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? This is progress. You’ll be left behind. Do you want to be left behind? Do you???

CSPAN interviews Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Triumph: This is such a special day, an annual gathering of the press that celebrates, or in tonight's case, fondly remembers free speech. It's also a night when members of the press sit down for a lavish, multi-course dinner served by some of their former colleagues.

I never broke character on SNL. I knew how much time the writers put into those scripts. You don’t want to be the one who throws it off. Lorne doesn’t like when the cast breaks. Even if the audience laughs, it doesn't work for the sketch. If I could get through the Chippendales sketch, I could get through anything.

Unfinished TV Funhouse cartoon from 2003, about the Iraq war. Here we are in another war, with a stated intent of liberating an oppressed people, & many questioning the sincerity of that intent. Hoping & praying this one, if it must continue, has a better result than that one -RS

When Ashley Padilla joined the 'SNL' cast for its landmark 50th season in September 2024, she had a scant digital footprint. She wasn’t a viral TikTok sketch performer, nor was she a stand-up comic with tons of clips. She seemed to enter comedy’s most mainstream outlet from nowhere. But by the end of that first season, Padilla had carved out a lane playing a variety of women not just on the verge of a nervous breakdown but full-body catapulting themselves over the edge of Nervous Breakdown Cliff. She elevates sketch scenes with just a twitch of the eye, an uncomfortable smile, a slow turn of the head, or a blood-curling shriek. Now, across the internet, there are highlight reels (okay, fan cams) and debates about whether she’ll get a midseason promotion to the main cast, and the trades are already deeming her SNL’s top Emmys contender. “It’s funny you say ‘breakout,’” Padilla says, after staff writer @ralter asks how she's adjusting to breakout 'SNL' fame. “I do not feel that way. I feel like last summer, I was going, Oh my God, please ask me back, please ask me back!” Padilla talks about how she got here, working with the late Diane Keaton, and begging to play the mom in your sketch: nymag.visitlink.me/YY2nlc
