ALT 1/4 Initial Sketch for the inciting incident illustration. The art features a battle with a wing of snub fighters and originally added a dreadnaught within the sketch. The live area is set to the needs of the book, which the bleed is set for 16:9 format and prints.
ALT 2/4 This stage I have spent a few days designing the snub fighters and shows the involvement with Steve Morrison from Errant Adventures Podcast. In his solo playtest of Ironsworn:Starforged a Founding Clan is featured heavily in the plot so I asked if he would like to collaborate with some inspiration for his founding clan. Influenced by romans we combined the laurel wreath and the ironsworn 8-pointed star. The Impossible Hexagon created the wreath while the 8 pointed star would remain centered and unbroken for a sense of order out of chaos.
ALT 3/4 With the ships design complete it was a matter of depicting the fight. In this attempt I tried to add raiding fighters for a dogfight. however they didn't stick and we opted for more focus on the ships and just showcasing explosions at the community site down on the ground level.
ALT 4/4 The final adaptation for the piece showcases the balance of values so the wing of fighters pop on the darker background. The distant explosions mimic the bombs from the cataclysm art featured earlier in the book. Red stripes are added to the wings and tie the fighters to the red desert planet they call home. I also added a motion blur to the planet below to give a sense of speed.
ALT 1 of 4. The sketch for the anomalous site art features a large alien structure made of black metal and red glowing lights. It juts out from a cooled lava flow, steam and smoke covers the surface. Two silhouetted figures and a large vehicle approach the structure.
ALT 2 of 4. The once singular bulky structure has been replaced with a temple like pyramid which has energy beams ascending towards a flipped pyramid floating above. We went through multiple structures but this one fit the right tone. could be advanced science, could be considered magic.
ALT 3 of 4. in this piece the structures have been more refined and the energy has been reworked, it is close to the final as adjustments are being made to better fit the roll tables that will be placed on top of the image
ALT 4 of 4. This final stage had the background and figures updated as well as the energy has been redone to look more like red lighting with a few stray bolts arcing onto the structure.
