Before music videos became a staple of music promotion, The Doors were already making them.
Their 1966 promotional film for “Break On Through” is considered one of the earliest music videos, created by Elektra to promote the band’s debut album and first single. Directed by Mark Abramson, the film was sent to television stations, theaters, and music venues.

📸: In 1969, The Doors climbed into their VW van and headed to the Morrison Hotel for the album cover shoot. Photographer @henrydiltz captured the moment, later recalling that the band was passing his copy of TIME Magazine around in the van.

“The End.” Circa 1968.
“'The End’ was always a changing piece. Jim used it as a, almost an open canvas for his poetic bits and pieces and fragments and images and little couplets and things that he just wanted to say, and it changed all the time, it was always a changing thing.” -The Doors Producer, Paul Rothchild

“Oh, don't ask why”
Before it became a Doors classic, “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)” came from the world of German theater. Written by Bertolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill, the song was adapted by The Doors for their 1967 debut album, bringing its theatrical, offbeat energy into the band’s sound.
Photos by Paul Ferrara and Roger Corbin.
“I Can’t See Your Face in My Mind”
Released in 1967 on Strange Days, “I Can’t See Your Face in My Mind” captures another side of The Doors’ sound, with Ray Manzarek’s Vox Continental organ and marimba featured throughout the track.
Produced by Paul A. Rothchild and recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, the 3-minute, 26-second song remains one of the album’s more atmospheric moments.
