We're used to saying, "Kids don't read anymore." But after talking to @Lanre_Lawal, it's clear that the bigger problem is that many just never had access.
That's why he's spending his own money restoring public school libraries across Nigeria.
Lanre's work is clear evidence that some of the most important nation-building work doesn't always make the headlines.

ID Cabassa is one of my favorite people to listen to and then there’s Asa Asika too who has a firm grasp of the entertainment business & tact to explain every detail without confusing. People who know what they’re doing should be handed the mic more, young people need mentors

Africa does not need intellectuals who simply translate Western thinking into African languages.
We need scholars who begin with African experiences, challenge inherited assumptions, and produce ideas capable of changing the material conditions of our people.

And what will this do to the long term mental health of consistent users?
Kids? Teenagers? Mentally vulnerable adults?
What are the safeguards against these kind of models?
LLMs are already convincing teens to unalive themselves.. what will a speech model that mimics human connection do?
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

This cannot be the solution to loneliness, but that's exactly what they will be marketing this chatbot as.
Interesting times ahead.

On 26 August 2026, the @WHO declared Uganda Ebola-free and presented the country with a certificate of recognition following the successful end of the outbreak.
Since the declaration, Uganda has reported no further Ebola-related cases, reflecting the importance of sustained public health vigilance, surveillance and preparedness in safeguarding the population.
Uganda remains committed to protecting public health and strengthening measures to prevent, detect and respond promptly to any future health threats.

So it seems this Nigerian case, similar to the Kenyan one, travelled from Eastern DRC, and entered Uganda (by land) and caught a flight back to Nigeria. Same itinerary as the Kenyan index case. More info is needed on where the Nigerian entered from but more likely Mpondwe-Lhubiriha border post in Kasese rather than the Kisoro side.
Why? Congo's North Kivu province which directly borders Uganda is currently having an 'out of control' Ebola situation according to the UN, Africa CDC and NGOs like MSF that are trying to contain the disease there. The region has apparently overtaken Ituri province, the initial hot-spot, in cases
But the current war in the area means the situation is nuanced with North Kivu itself. For example Goma, a massive city of 1.5m people which is nearest to Kisoro district and is under M23 rebel control, almost has no ebola. It has registered only a handful of cases since the outbreak, in single digits which the rebel authorities immediately contained through tough measures.
Beni and Butembo on the other hand, 2 other massive urban hubs further north in the province, are swamped with thousands of cases and the situation in rural areas around them is also terrible. These areas, unlike Goma, are under DRC government control.
M23 in Goma has literally imposed a blockade on these neighbouring areas in the same province, heavily restricting movement of people from them to their city. Why? To protect "their" territory.
Early in the outbreak, Rwanda which shares a border with Goma at Gisenyi border post closed it's border, affecting livelihoods of thousands of congelese that rely on the busy border town for trade. Later things were eased a bit. But for Gomalese to entre Rwanda they still have to under go stringent checks and measures.
This is how Ugandan buses still trekk the Kampala-Goma route via Kisoro and Rwanda and back. Because the buses have to cross Rwanda also, via Kyanika (Uganda) and Gisenyi ( Rwanda) border posts, the two international border checks are a good buffer. Actually someone recently told me that the buses nolonger cross Gisenyi into Goma. The Congolese from the other side ( its only abt 5km) have to come by other means, present themselves by foot to Rwandan port health authorities at Gisenyi and enter the country to board Kampala-bound buses or go elsewhere in RW.
However on the other side in Western Uganda on Kasese side, it seems vigilance hss become lax since the outbreak ( DRC is so massive in size that 26 Ugandan districts share a border with it and hundreds, probably thousands of informal crossing 'panyas'/ routes). The Kivus or Ituri provinces are bigger in size than several African countries.
The 133-kilometer route from Butembo via Beni to Kasindi/Mpondwe-Lhubiriha border post into Kasese district especially seems to be risky for us right now. The Kenyan index case used that route to enter Uganda, and ended up at Entebbe airport and flew out to Nairobi without detection.
I think Uganda needs to completely close its land borders with DRC again as they did at the beginning of the outbreak, otherwise we will soon be swamped again @DianaAtwine

This card was used before, to create an atmosphere of fear and tension among visitors and tourists. You are not the first to come up with these lies. I tell you, I live in Kigali. I do not remember the last time I saw an RDF soldier patrolling the streets. Not even in CHOGM, not when we have high level visitors, not even in Rubavu, which is close to DRC. I don't understand what you guys want to archive by recycling this narrative. Leave us alone in "our fear", stay in your effin' countries. Who invited you here?

🚨 Google lost power in London this morning and Revolut, a bank with 80 million customers, went down with it.
I've spent the morning reading what Revolut users went through. It's wild.
People stranded at petrol stations, unable to pay for fuel or a taxi to the airport.
One traveller couldn't get out of a train station in Japan.
A 71-year-old woman stood at a supermarket till for an hour. Her kid had to drive 30km to bring her cash.
Card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals, currency exchange, share trading. All down.
Revolut's statement said "all our customers' money and data are safe."
Safe. You just can't touch it.
Google's explanation so far is a "power event" in one zone of its London cloud region. Its advice to affected customers was to move their workloads to another zone or region "if feasible."
Must be nice. Revolut customers couldn't even move £10.
In July the UK government put Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft and Oracle under direct Bank of England oversight, because one outage at any of them could shake the entire financial system.
12 days ago the Bank of England ran a drill with the UK's 38 biggest banks and market operators. The scenario they practised was a global cloud outage.
And exactly one year ago today, AWS went down and took Lloyds and Halifax with it.
Same date. Different cloud. Lloyds was having problems again this morning.
Revolut spent five years earning a UK banking licence.
Bitcoin has been running for almost 18 years. It doesn't have a London region.

In 2021 alone, the government allocated ₦1.93 billion for a WhatsApp interception system and ₦2.93 billion for a communications interception system.

It's fascinating to realise how many supposedly educated people on here cannot distinguish between an advertising or PR campaign and a political campaign, or even understand the context in which the word "campaign" is being used.
They see the word "campaign" and immediately get triggered, without bothering to understand what they're reading.
Quite fascinating.
