New report out this week from our friends at @responsiblecred, highlighting why the goal shouldn't just be to improve access to credit - but to improve access to credit that's safe, affordable, and responsible. responsible-credit.org.uk/re…
What will it take to deliver “good growth in every postcode”?
Our Director of Campaigns sets out why we need a bigger National Wealth Fund, stronger regional banks and a thriving community finance sector to make it a reality.

Too many small businesses still struggle to access the finance they need to grow.
CDFIs are stepping in where mainstream lenders fall short. A #FairBankingAct could help scale their role and widen access to fair, affordable credit.

1/ Today, we joined with 24 unions, charities & think tanks to call on the UK Government to scale up the National Wealth Fund (NWF) into a world-leading national development bank. Here's why it matters: 👇🧵
4/ To achieve this, the UK government should enable the NWF to raise its own finance and invest long-term, just like other successful public banks worldwide. This independence would dramatically increase investment and combine fiscal credibility with greater economic ambition.
A scaled up National Wealth Fund would deliver the investment needed to provide clean energy for all, create fair green jobs, strengthen local economies and lower bills. So what’s the UK government waiting for? Read our full statement here: shorturl.at/8Eluy
Small businesses need access to fair, affordable finance to invest, grow and thrive.
But gaps in mainstream lending are leaving some reliant on expensive, unsustainable debt.
That’s why we’re calling for a #FairBankingAct. @FBfACampaign

Small businesses are being pushed into high-cost debt because too many cannot access fair, affordable finance.

“A Fair Banking Act would help turn your ambition of growth in every postcode into practice.”
Great to see @CoopParty and @gareththomasMP backing the @FBfACampaign and helping build momentum for a #FairBankingAct.

I’ve coordinated a letter to the Chancellor, signed by @LabourParty & @CoopParty colleagues, calling for a Fair Banking Act to ensure people & viable businesses can access affordable finance wherever they live. Good growth in every postcode needs fair access to finance.
The Chancellor says the next chapter of Britain’s growth story will be written in more places.
To help make that happen, 29 MPs have written to him calling for a #FairBankingAct.

The Energy Transition Council's 'paradox of progress' - the transition is moving v slow despite cheap clean energy.
I'd argue this is about relative financing costs - govts need to make clean financing cheap & fossil fuel financing expensive.

With the UK’s first Labour and Co-operative Prime Minister, and a commitment to double the co-operative & mutuals economy, there’s a real opportunity to strengthen local economies & get more investment into communities.
A #FairBankingAct can help deliver it.

The commitment to double the size of the co-operative and mutual economy means handing power directly to people in their own communities.
Labour and Co-operative MP @andrewpakes_ asked the Government today how Whitehall will deliver on that ambition.
The Lab is closed this week. Here’s why 👇

Barclays made £3.3bn profit last quarter alone.
UK community lenders, who reach the small businesses banks turn away, lent just £181m in the whole of 2025.
Gareth Thomas MP wants Barclays, Santander and HSBC to each put in £10m, and a Fair Banking Act to make sure they do.
Britain’s banks can do more to unlock opportunity in the communities they serve.
This welcome call from @GarethThomasMP for Barclays, Santander and HSBC to invest £30m in local lenders shows why we need a #FairBankingAct.
