In 2018 Brighton County Court found a claim by Billy Cooper, a builder from Carshalton, Surrey, to be โfundamentally dishonest.โ He had sought about ยฃ98,000 from Aviva over a 2013 car accident, saying he could not work in construction and was unsteady on his feet. Social media showed him roofing, walking and cycling. The claim was thrown out and he was ordered to pay Avivaโs costs, more than ยฃ13,000. The ยฃ36m donations are legal and to change the law retrospectively would be outrageous! Yes, it was announced in Parliament on 25 March that the legislation would apply to any donations from that day onwards, but that was the day all Reform MPs staged a walk-out, so we missed it.
