New Treasury stats out today suggest that departments made significant efficiencies and savings in 2025–26.
They report savings of 4.1% from ‘efficiency, savings, and productivity’, well above the 2024 Autumn Budget target of 2%.
What should we take from these figures? 🧵
Postponing council tax revaluation yet again is unjustifiable and risks entrenching an out-of-date system in Wales and beyond.
@StuartAdam_IFS and @fiscalphillips respond to the Welsh Government's announcement that it no longer intends to go ahead with a council tax revaluation in April 2028

Horrible decision from Welsh ministers not to go ahead with a much-needed update of property valuations for council tax in 2028, having previously voted for the legislation. Inexcusable. 1/3 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6ly…

With interest rates and inflation expected to remain higher for longer, debt interest spending will continue to put pressure on the public finances.
Inflation will also add to pressure on public service spending plans, making this the real challenge for John Healey at the Budget
