In 1999, civil rights icon Rosa Parks sued OutKast over their 1998 hit “Rosa Parks” from Aquemini.
The song’s title referenced Parks, while its chorus included the line “Ah-ha, hush that fuss / Everybody move to the back of the bus.” Parks’ attorneys argued that using her name without permission exploited her identity and could imply she endorsed the song.
OutKast argued the title was artistic expression. The legal battle lasted several years before the case was settled in 2005, with the terms undisclosed.
