You can also go to a public library and have a conversation with a librarian that might help you expand your taste and worldview instead of merely affirming it. They’ll even let you check out the books for free.

AI - the next wave of American imperialism.
Google felled an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 trees in Finland for planned AI data centers, through its Finnish subsidiary Tuike Finland.
LiDAR Lens lidarlens.sarsen.org/ is, I think, the best and most complete free LiDAR tool there is for England and Wales. Every square metre of both countries' 1 m LiDAR is there, live, in a lens you drag across the map. You can light it from any angle, exaggerate it, and switch between hillshade, multi-direction hillshade, slope, local relief, sky-view factor, aspect and red relief, until faint banks, ditches, barrows and lost field systems jump out. Click any spot and it tells you the ground's measurements and the recorded sites nearby, with links straight to the records. Old OS maps, aerial photos and modern maps sit underneath for comparison. It works on a phone in the field as well as on a desktop. It costs nothing, there is no login, no account, and no adverts. sarsen.org/2026/10/lidar-len…
If this is what the Trump administration is doing to hundreds of perfectly healthy mature trees in Washington, D.C. in broad daylight, imagine what they're doing to our national forests, protected public lands, and the Arctic Refuge.

I've probably read this poem 100 times, but when the world seems particularly gone to hell, it still brings me to tears.

Stories. They simplify. They connect. They communicate. But what is the role of personal stories in academic research? A data point of one - ourselves - is not research... This week we probe how stories can be used in our research. New post - youtu.be/hjvVhz1shw8

🗓️ For October’s Building of the Month, Clare St George explores Herbert Shepherd’s Paddington Library (1923-29), and the importance of saving those buildings that play a secondary role to the activity taking place within them.
✍🏼 'Paddington Library is at the end of my road. It is no Bibliothèque Nationale, nor Biblioteca Vasconcelos, but it is an essential part of civic life in Bayswater, my neighbourhood in West London. Situated within the Porchester Centre – a relatively well-preserved Classical Beaux-Arts building designed in the 1920s – Paddington Library has witnessed and been subject to the changing demographics and technologies of reading through the twentieth century.'

One of the more disturbing elements of the world of Fahrenheit 451 is that the classics still exist, they’ve just been wholly rewritten to remove anything that makes them interesting or challenging. Our addiction to a fully frictionless existence is going to kill us.

This is one of the craziest and most fascinating podcasts I've ever listened to.
Here's the backstory:
Millions of children are struggling to learn how to read.
But the problem isn't kids–it's how kids are being taught.
In the 2000s, schools stopped using phonics (sounding out words) for a new reading system called three-cuing (guessing unfamiliar words using context clues).
But that new system turned out to be based on false data.
Researchers tried to show it was ineffective, but politics and publishers got in the way and delayed changes in our reading system for decades.
One publisher made over $1 billion selling books to schools on a reading system that didn't work.
Now, 20-years later, schools are finally reversing course and going back to teaching phonics. But so much damage has already been done.
The podcast is called "Sold a Story" and it dives into the science, history, profits, and politics behind the reading wars.
If you're an educator, parent, or teacher, you have to listen to this podcast.
