Sammy Davis, Jr., Paul Mooney and his Cousin: Rudy Ealy, Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby. Each of these men left a very different mark on American entertainment, but together they represent several generations of Black performers who helped expand what Black comedy could look and sound like. Sammy Davis Jr. had already become a major entertainer decades earlier, breaking barriers as a singer, dancer, actor and comedian while performing for audiences around the world. Richard Pryor would go on to transform stand-up by making race, poverty, relationships and his own personal struggles central to his comedy. His influence on generations of comedians, including Eddie Murphy, is difficult to overstate. Paul Mooney became one of the most important writers and comedians behind some of Pryor's most daring material. Their creative partnership helped Pryor develop the raw, character-driven style that eventually made him one of the most influential comedians in American history. Mooney later became widely known for his work on Chappelle's Show and for comedy that confronted racism without softening its message. Bill Cosby was another major figure in the evolution of Black comedy, becoming one of the first Black comedians to achieve enormous mainstream success through stand-up, television and film. Whatever their very different personal and professional legacies, these entertainers were part of a larger history in which Black comedians repeatedly challenged the limits placed on them by American entertainment.
