The time has come to say goodbye to The Nats Blog...
“It is an honor and a privilege to know that after 11 years of coverage…these will be the eight very last words ever written here:
The Washington Nationals are the World Series Champions.”

The MLB's proposed "salary floor" for next season is $171M.
This year, the Nats payroll was $98M, and that included $33M+ for Strasburg.
Next year, accounting for gauranteed contracts, and pre/arbitration they will be at ~$70M.
So the Lerners would need to spend $100M+.
In their last 15 games:
S King - .391 avg, 1.270 OPS, 8 HR
T Lipscomb- .380 avg, 1.168 OPS, 8 HR
E Willits - .245 avg, .909 OPS, 1 HR
C Wallace -.297 avg, .869 OPS, 3 HR
E Petry - .316 avg, 1.027 OPS, 5 HR
C James - .304 avg, .989 OPS, 4 HR
R Cruz - .263 avg, 867 OPS, 4 HR
Both Rendon and Strasburg signed 7-year $245 million deals after the Nats won in 2019.
They both expire this year.
In the end they will have combined to have missed 1,799 games out of a possible 2,064 games.
$490M, only playing in 12% of the games.
Crazy.
Looking only at 1st + Supplemental Rd.
C. Marrero - 38 games, -1 WAR
C. Willems - only 6 games above low A
M. Burgess - Never played above AA
A. Crow - Didn’t sign
A. Meyer - only 22 career GS
B. Goodwin - 0 WAR, 3 seasons
S. Romero - 3 G’s
M. Denaberg - barely made A+
I watched Remember The Titans today out of the blue, for no reason. Showed it to my boys the first time.
Crazy.

This.
We do not need to replenish the farm system.
The team is on the precipice of being a true contender even without a pitching staff this year. They have a better +/- than 4 teams in the playoff picture.
Invest now.
There’s a few things at play here:
1. CJ’s trade value is lower as a 2B than a SS. So moving him there may be a sign they are keeping him. His extension cost as a 2B is also (slightly) lower than a SS.
2. Seaver King getting a cup of coffee at SS increases his trade value.
My grandfather always taught me….
Don’t be the guy who wastes an ABS challenge on an 0-0 count and then waste the last remaining challenge after you clearly strikeout because you are frustrated….leaning your team with no challenges.
His 162 game average age 22-24 is:
1.1 WAR, 20 doubles, 20 HR’s, 32 SB.
He has had only half a season of an organization that values development.
He missed 85 games due to an oblique injury.
Is he likely to be a superstar? Probably not. But give the guy some breathing room.
