On the birth anniversary of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, sharing a piece of historic gold.
2 December 1947. India is just 108 days old. PM Jawaharlal Nehru writes to a 38 year old physicist about atomic energy.
"We are anxious to help you in every way in developing atomic energy in India."
He doesn't make empty promises. He tells Bhabha plainly that he cannot guarantee the funds. But he gives him something more valuable - his trust. & he encloses a note for Bhabha to carry to Britain, Canada and France, telling the world's scientists that this man speaks for India and deserves their cooperation.
Think about that. A nation only months old chose to bet on science. A Prime Minister personally vouched for his scientist before the world.
The bond between them was rare. Bhabha called Nehru "Bhai." Nehru gave him freedom, Bhabha gave India a future. Out of that trust came TIFR, the Atomic Energy Commission & the foundations of India's nuclear and scientific strength.
Nations are not built only by those who hold power. They are built when those in power believe in those who hold ideas.
Remembering the man who looked at a newborn nation and saw a scientific power. We are still living inside his dream.
