7 straight years of increasing NLW
Which i consider to be the nastiest stealth tax of them all
Because they raise the rate but freeze the allowance, pushing more lower income earners into paying tax so HMRC collects the difference
And it doesn't end there, businesses dont simply absorb this, prices go up so HMRC collects more money in VAT receipts too
If they really wanted to help people, raise the tax free threshold to £20k so its in line with this after all these years

Everyone wants people to earn more. But businesses don’t have bottomless pockets.
After higher employer NI and rising bills, another increase in wage costs will mean fewer vacancies, reduced hours or higher prices.
Labour can’t keep making jobs more expensive and expect more of them to magically appear.

Stocking shelves in Sainsbury's and an entry-level graduate job in accounting are already very close to paying the same
this will only make the job market more fucked (particularly for young people)

Replying to @KarlPritch86 @TheProf_______
2 people earning NMW, living as a couple, would bring home £347.56p more a month than a single person earning £54,912. So live alone, bring in the same wage, but apparently you’re well off enough to pay an extra £4,170.72p a year in tax. Makes me perfect sense that…..

So household energy bills are going up ANOTHER 27%. Petrol & diesel are through the roof. Food & rent extortionate but inflation is 3%? What am I missing?

No point now going to Uni for 3 years and racking up £60k in debt for that law or finance degree. You can earn as much stacking shelves in Sainsbury’s & no threat of an AI job loss.
#MinimumWage rises again above inflation.

Just shy of £23,000 pounds separating those on the minimum wage and those now in the higher tax bracket. This is completely unsustainable, the squeeze on middle earners and the pressure this places on employers is nothing short of a scandal.
Britain has finally achieved equality. The minimum wage rises to around £13.20 an hour (about £27,456 a year full-time), while the 40% tax rate still starts at £50,270, a threshold that has barely moved in years. That means anyone earning about 1.8x the minimum wage is now a “high earner.” Somewhere a Soviet economist is weeping with envy. The solution, apparently, is to keep raising the floor while never touching the ceiling, until everyone meets in the middle and pays 40%.
The Chancellor will deliver his first Budget on Wednesday. It is reported the minimum wage will increase by nearly 4%.
This will mean so much to some of the lowest paid in our country. Under Labour work will pay.
Labour is for working people.

Labour Minister Wes Streeting said we have “1,000 days to prepare for war.” But they refuse to stop the cross-Channel invasion. How can we defend Britain when an army of unidentified men arrives by boat every day, and gets police protection + hotel rooms?

What is the point of the Budget if everything has already been announced? If I were the Speaker I’d be furious this morning.

Dear @JohnHealey_MP , did you know that the State Pension pays £241 per week?
Your proposed new Minimum Wage pays £528 for 40 hours.
HOW THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT WE PENSIONERS TO LIVE ON LESS THAN HALF THE MINIMUM WAGE?????

Just raise the personal allowance
Stop putting additional cost on businesses resulting in price rises and closures.
Honestly, this is ridiculous now.
It’s going to push so many small businesses passed the brink.
Minimum wage won’t matter to anyone, if there’s no companies to create the jobs .
"Free movement had allowed, in my view, the undercutting of wages. Some people debate this, but I saw evidence of it. Where people were brought in by agencies from other European countries and it was used to bring wages down"

This was the @andyburnham I supported for Leader way back in 2015 when I was still a member of Labour. Just wish he had stuck to the principles he had when he made this speech. Opening the free movement issue again is just madness and I think he will live to regret it.
