We learned about his death from the media as we saw him being shot repeatedly in the back after helping a woman from his community. This was not a protest that Alex was at. His hands were in the air, and his face was on the ground when he was executed by ICE agents. We know exactly what our eyes saw. No one from the federal government called us on that day. But they did go on TV to tell lies about Alex. No one has called us since. No one has recanted those lies.

Minnesota Republicans are running campaign ads linking Somalis to crime, fraud, and violence. Meanwhile, Minnesota has witnessed some of the most horrific acts of violence in recent memory, including the murder of young children at Annunciation Catholic School and the assassination of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. Both crimes were committed by white individuals. And Minnesota's biggest fraud scandal, Feeding Our Future, was led by a white woman. Yet nobody is running campaign ads blaming white Minnesotans for those crimes. And rightly so. When politicians turn the crimes of individuals into an indictment of an entire ethnic community, they're revealing far more about themselves than about the people they're attacking. Keep running those ads. We see exactly what you're doing. And we won't forget it. Elections come and go. Politicians rise and fall. The political attacks will eventually fade. But Somalis will still be here. And we will come out of this stronger, more united, more organized, more politically aware, and more determined than ever to stand up for ourselves and shape our own future.

Hasan Piker was blunt yesterday in Minneapolis: the far left’s strategy is not to enter the Democratic tent and play along. They intend to run the show. In July I wrote "The Democrats' Tea Party Moment," in which I asked whether the DSA and the socialist wing would remain a footnote after the election — or if they would collapse the “big tent” so many Democratic leaders have invited them into, and take outsized control. Piker answered it:“I have full confidence in the socialist electeds and the progressive electeds to caucus with one another and to become an undeniable show of force that actually forces Washington, D.C. to put the people in charge… We are going to put people in the driver’s seat once and for all.” Democratic voters: ignore Piker at your own peril. He is telling you what they want to do.
