Self righteous weak minded cunts like this coming at you and making it personal because you post something they don’t like are fucking useless
Replying to @osgamer74
No no, please, I do so love listening to you spewing 40 year old opinions like they’re gospel. Shall we take out critical hits? GG hated those. How about going back to gold = xp? Please, enlighten us, what other dumbass ideas you want to cite from when “Like a Virgin” was king?

If everyone's a select, nobody's a select. Parents inability to say no + rose-colored glasses = easy money for many. Do what Gretzky said. Put the gear away when the (traditional) season is over and play other shit. Also, the cream rises to the top. If your kid has D1/pro potential, they'll find him without you having to rack up Days Inn points.
‘Travel sports,’ a term that has come to encompass all sorts of private teams, leagues, and clubs, used to be for the truly exceptional young athlete. Now, they’re for anyone willing to pay — an expensive, exhausting commitment that has become popular not necessarily because millions of parents want them for their children but because it can feel like there’s no other choice. Rec programs are underfunded and struggle to compete with for-profit leagues for prime field, rink, and court times. And the level of play is diluted, often very early, as travel teams are incentivized to enroll children at young ages. Around 5 million children in the U.S. now compete on travel teams. Parents find themselves trapped. They know the benefits of sports and want that for their children, yet giving it to them often means buying into a sports ecosystem that’s inherently flawed. As the pay-to-play model increasingly takes hold, so does the idea that kids should start competing at younger and younger ages, risking their sense of self along with their shoulders and ACLs. “I never want my kids to look back and say I didn’t do everything I could to help them live their dreams,” a mother of three soccer players said. She’s hired professional photographers to take action shots for her 12- and 13-year-olds’ Instagram accounts — the platform has become a recruiting tool — and they’ve both asked her to pay for personal trainers. “I think the word isn’t ‘specialize’; you are ‘professionalizing’ your kid early. You are exposing them to everything professionals have to deal with — I’m talking injury, time, schedule, everything,” said John Van Benschoten, a former MLB player and travel-baseball coach. It makes one ask: All this for what? And for whom? Read Caitlin Moscatello’s cover story on how travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming — and the investors who are making a killing: nymag.visitlink.me/1-gbZQ

How anyone can be annoyed at WotC removing slavery from Dark Sun is beyond me. OF COURSE it was going to be removed. The lovers of Dark Sun’s original content still have that content, AND you must realise by now that you ARE NOT WotC’s target demographic. Just move on.

Trista had never played tabletop Dungeons & Dragons before, so I recently dusted off some old skills and ran a little four player game for her. I never learned modern 5e rules, and I wanted to keep it simple, so I initially considered going full retro with the original Little Brown Book rules. That was a little too crude, so I wound up with the Rules Cyclopedia version, harkening back to my D&D basic set in the late 70s. The big change from my old games is that Trista and the other players were already skilled Warhammer figure painters, which meant everyone painted their own figure and they collaborated to give me a full menagerie of painted monsters for the game. The expense of lead miniatures and lack of art talent in my early gaming groups had always meant unpainted player characters and cardboard chits for the monsters. I had a little bit of a bias towards “it is a game of imagination!”, but visual aids are good, actually. Everyone had fun, and I may be on the hook for doing this once a quarter.

Wow. This is crazy. A developer trained an AI agent in simulation and deployed it onto a real robotic air hockey table using reinforcement learning. This robot can track the puck with millimeter-level accuracy and react in roughly 20 milliseconds, fast enough to challenge even skilled human players. We’re moving from robots that follow programmed rules to machines that learn strategies in simulation and execute them in the physical world.

The Arkadiko Bridge was built over 3000 years ago during the Mycenaean Period. Potentially the oldest bridge in existence, it is still used today.

Omygoooooooodnesss!!!!! WHY have i never seen this before?!? What an awesome idea!!! Can you imagine as a prerequisite all seniors choose a kindergartners to mentor and teach....... teaching the seniors patience and pride, and the kindergartners have someone to look up to ( not in their family) And when the seniors graduate, the kindergartners will graduate with them (into first grade) That would be an AWESOME program!

While I disagree with some of the positioning and lineages - I really like this graph: mostly so in terms of identifying both theme and rules as separate elements of fantasy adventure gaming.
