Where there’s one deer, there’s often more. If you see one deer crossing, slow down, others may follow close behind. Collisions often happen when drivers speed up too soon after the first animal passes. #DeerSafety #RoadSafety #AnimalCrossing #DriveSafe #SlowDownForDeer

Today in celebration of #WorldRiversDay we wanted to recognise our river here in Cardiff - The River Taff. World Rivers Day aims to spread awareness for rivers around the world. The Taff supports a wide range of species including our beloved otters. Otter📸: Freddie Montague

This Mother’s Day, let’s pause to celebrate the Mums with webbed feet! Common frogs lay up to 4,000 eggs in jelly-like spawns & pool frogs (one of the UK’s rarest frogs) stay near their spawn to keep an eye out for danger! Great parenting! #Froglife

Grizzly 399. P22, the legendary mountain lion. OR93, the wolf who walked to SoCal. All killed by vehicles. There's an essay in this: Individual animals tend to become charismatic bc they live alongside people or undertake epic journeys. Either way, they're vulnerable to cars. 💔
Today our community mourns the loss of wildlife icon, the Queen of the Tetons, grizzly #399. In the winter of 2021/2022 we exhibited "While They’re Sleeping: A Story of Bears" with compelling images from wildlife photographer and conservationist Thomas G. Mangelsen.

Native hedgehog populations have declined by between 30-75% in rural areas since 2000. 📉 🦔 To tackle this, with @PTES, we've created the first National Hedgehog Conservation Strategy, to help us drive desperately needed change. Find out more 👉buff.ly/404Ef7R

One year ago, this 1/4 acre was just an area of mown grass. I then took the topsoil off, formed some banks, made a wildlife pond, sowed the area with wildflowers & planted many native trees & shrubs. When I visited this week to carry out the first hay cut, it’s apparent that the area is now a thriving habitat for so much wildlife. Field voles & shrews inhabit the meadow, which Kestrels & Barn owls now use for hunting. Marsh Harriers have also been seen hunting along the margins. A pair of Hares have moved into the longer grassy areas that are left uncut around the banks & margins. Stock Doves are regular visitors to the pond for bathing/drinking, as have been Grey Wagtails, Sparrowhawks & Oystercatchers to name but a few. The pond has been colonised by many species of insects, including a myriad of Dragonflies, Great diving beetles & Water-boatmen. The above is in addition to the many species of Bees, Butterflies & Moths that are now benefitting from the already florally diverse wildflower meadow, and this is only very early stages. Never let it be said that nature isn’t remarkably resilient, opportunistic & absolutely CAN bounce back, given a chance. I will continue to manage this site (which takes very little maintenance) over the coming years and will report all my new findings. If a single 1/4 acre plot can provide this much habitat for wildlife within the space of a year, imagine how much wildlife could benefit as a result of all of us doing our bit for nature in our own gardens/green spaces. Best bit is, you don’t even need 1/4 of an acre to achieve this 👍

This chart from Yellowstone Safe Passages does a good job illustrating a key #roadecology concept: High traffic rates can *reduce* roadkill while simultaneously exacerbating the barrier effect, since animals (or at least large mammals) often don't attempt to cross busy highways.

100s of amphibians were on the move last night due to wet & mild conditions Sadly the casualty rate was higher than normal as there was quite alot of early evening traffic Ahead of Charlcombe Lane being closed on Monday, if its raining can drivers please seek alternative routes

Here's a tragic #roadecology detail in a recent-ish @hakaimagazine story: captive-raised Tasmanian devils habituated to the noise of traffic and used roadsides more frequently upon release into the wild, making them more susceptible to roadkill. Oof. hakaimagazine.com/features/t…

Roadkill is a problem (see below for number estimates, it's scary) & we need solutions But these dead animals can be useful for science In a NEW PAPER @PLOSONE we use roadkill to get genetic data that can help us monitor biodiversity & diseases doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone…
