This is an excellent guide on what you can and should do to help if someone you know is taken by ICE.
The most important thing - 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁.
There's PLENTY we can do to make sure the person has the best chance of a fair outcome.
Keep in mind that MANY documented immigrants who are currently going through the legal process to stay in the US have been detained and deported.
At least on one US citizen was deported and the government was forced to bring him back.
We are not powerless.
If ICE Takes Someone You Know
A lot of people have asked me what they can actually do if someone they know is taken by ICE.
Here are the resources we found most useful, and the things I would do first.
1. Find them.
ICE has an online detainee locator. You can search using the person's A-number (immigration #) and country of birth, or their exact first and last name and country of birth.
locator.ice.gov
Note that someone may not appear immediately after being taken. The system also doesn’t contain everyone in ICE custody. If you can't find them, keep checking and contact the appropriate ICE field office.
ICE's Detention Reporting and Information Line is 1-888-351-4024.
2. Find a good immigration lawyer.
This is the most important thing you can do.
People taken by ICE have the right to an attorney, but unlike in a criminal case, the government generally doesn’t have to provide one.
The National Immigration Legal Services Directory lets you search for nonprofit organizations offering free or low-cost immigration legal help by state, county, ZIP code, or even detention facility.
immigrationadvocates.or…
The ACLU also has a good overview of the rights of someone who has been detained.
3. Get their A-number.
This is the immigration identification number used to track a person's case.
It’s generally nine digits. If an older A-number has only eight, government systems usually require a zero at the beginning.
This makes everything easier - finding someone, checking their immigration court case, and communicating with lawyers.
If you don't have it, ask the person's family or lawyer. It may also appear on previous immigration documents.
4. Find out what's happening with their case.
The Justice Department has an online system where you can enter an A-number and check basic immigration court information, including upcoming hearings and certain decisions.
You can also call the automated immigration court hotline at 1-800-898-7180.
Keep in mind: the online system doesn’t contain everything. It doesn’t include bond proceedings or motions. Official court notices are the best source.
5. Start gathering documents.
Friends and family can help collect information that may be useful to the lawyer: evidence of family ties, employment, a business, home ownership, community involvement, and letters from people who know the person. Our neighborhood wrote a lot of letters.
Give everything to the lawyer. Let the lawyer decide what matters for the particular case.
6. Ask the lawyer about bond or other possible release.
Don't assume that detention automatically means someone has to stay locked up while the case proceeds.
But don't assume bond is available either.
Whether you’re eligible depends on the person's situation, immigration history, and the legal authority under which they are being detained. This is one of the first questions to ask the lawyer.
If money may be needed, friends can start organizing so that it is available quickly. The bond for our gardener was not high - only $4,000.
7. Help the family.
This one sounds obvious but it matters.
Someone suddenly has to deal with lawyers, detention calls, court dates, childcare, lost income, bills, transportation, and the terror of not knowing what’s going to happen.
Bring food. Drive someone somewhere. Help make calls. Set up a fundraiser if they need one. Take something off their plate.
8. Know what the detained person should do.
The ACLU's advice is simple if you are taken: stay silent, ask for a lawyer, and don't sign anything or make decisions about the immigration case without speaking with a lawyer.
And finally:
Don't assume there’s nothing you can do.
That's what I would have assumed before this happened, but it isn't true.
There are phone calls to make. Lawyers to find. Documents to gather. Money to raise. Families to help.
Just start.
That’s what Betty did in our neighborhood.
Be a Betty.

Earlier today, the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero in Manhattan was defaced with graffiti.

Cornell West has always been shady! We tried to warn you.
This is happening for one reason only — to help Trump win the Electoral College!!!
Dr Cornell West is dealing in some shady sh*t to get his name on the ballot in AZ and he’s just fine with it.
🚨 A group of lawyers with deep ties to the Republican Party scrambled over the weekend to rescue an effort to get independent presidential candidate Cornel West on the Arizona ballot, offering one of the clearest examples yet of the GOP’s extensive involvement in assisting the left-wing candidate.

Bullshit alert. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza should be voting in Palestinian elections. But the Palestinian Authority has refused to hold elections since 2006. And the Hamas terrorists in Gaza haven't held elections since seizing power in 2007.
This is the classic deception of so many Palestinian activists: blame Israel while pretending Palestinians have no agency or responsibility for their own future.

If you know me, you know that I am a strong supporter of @JaredEMoskowitz and I consider him a friend. NO ELECTED PERSON HAS DONE MORE IN THE PAST FEW YEARS TO COMBAT ANTISEMITISM AND TO SUPPORT ISRAEL THAN JARED. Jared has faced threats because of it. I firmly believe antisemitism exists in the extremes of both parties and we need to be honest about that. Jared has forcefully rebuked Democrats that he serves with, while Scott Singer could not forcefully rebuke Trump for saying shylock. Simply put, character matters and Singer is a dishonest hack who does not deserve to serve.
If you haven't voted yet, get out and vote today for @RepMoskowitz.

These terrible takes are great opportunities for learning:
I’ve always wondered how Israelis could have any trace of national pride when their country is so parasitically dependent on another country. Thoughts?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
US aid to Israel was $3.3B in FY2025 (~0.5% of its $611B GDP), a smaller share than for many other recipients.

Never in my life did I think I would witness something so abhorrent in a Western country. To see rape openly glorified as resistance is beyond sickening. If this is what some pro-Palestinian activists are promoting, I do not want anyone who advocates such barbarity in our country, regardless of who they are.

It’s fucking vile and deeply disturbing that CBC News is partnering with a betting site and pushing it as legitimate polling.
wtf are you thinking, @bariweiss?!
CBS News polling shows 75% of voters feel the Trump administration hasn't put enough focus on lowering prices – one factor driving Democratic leads in some competitive Senate races. Traders on Kalshi, our prediction market sponsor, have Democrats as favorites to win the Senate.

How it's going for Jews in Michigan right now, brought to you by the local news.
Abdul, born and raised Michigan, is not "attached" to America, corrupted, the same argument used for generations to cast Jews as a sinister outside force. The attempt to paint Muslims in this way, immigrants, trans people, comedians, the media, the colleges, the Democrats, etc, etc. - it is not JUST that this kind of politics will come for Jews. It's already here, in the alt-right staffers in congressional offices, in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories gaining increasing purchase on the right, podcasters just asking questions about the Holocaust, great replacement theory, goyslop, etc, etc, etc. And as Vance is making clear, it won't end with Trump. The more successful a movement based on dominance and hatred and protecting "real" Americans, the more I worry about the safety of Jews in this country. The midterms are a chance to check MAGA, halt this rise, and in Michigan prove it ineffective. Is there anti-semitism on the left? YES. Of course. We ought to call that out directly, and reject it as wrong and toxic and self-destructive, which I won't stop doing. But we cannot lose sight of what we are facing from the MAGA right. These are the stakes to me.

Eight years ago, 11 Jews were killed and 6 injured while praying at Shabbat services at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
This senseless act of anti-Jewish terrorism should remind us that antisemitism is a form of domestic extremism that has no place in a democracy.
Sadly, Jewish institutions — including synagogues — must now spend $1 billion to provide the necessary security so a mass shooting like the one at Tree of Life doesn’t happen again.
Congress must pass my bipartisan Jewish American Security Act to help protect innocent people simply trying to pray.
May the memories of those we lost always be a blessing.

When a former Republican governor and a former Democratic governor who once ran against each other unite behind the same Senate candidate, that’s NEWS.
David Beasley and Jim Hodges are backing Dr. Annie Andrews in South Carolina.
So now Darline Graham faces a bipartisan endorsement of her Democratic opponent just 7 days before the election.
