Initially, I had the impression that Mufti Taqi said something absurd to the effect that selling something that benefits Palantir or is used for genocidal purposes, is okay ( I guess many laymen who retweeted the post might not have watched the video or if they did, they didn't get it). However, upon watching the video, he is actually saying something pretty normal that if someone is sure of such a usage then the transaction is not Halal. I am not really sure what is the issue here. The remarks on the post are simply misleading. If may try to find faults myself, it could be the following: 1- Why does Mufti say that the transaction takes place nevertheless? 2- Why does he condition forbidding sale upon certainty and lets it go when you are unsure? As for 1, it appears that the objector may not know the very difference between بيع فاسد and بيع باطل. Furthermore, this doesnt look like fasid even, it is Haram due to an extrinsic reason which is aiding in sin and transgression. The transaction itself is valid. A close analog I can provide from Ilm ul-Kalam is the position of many Deobandi scholars that a lie in Kalam Nafsi is intrinsically impossible, however, a deception or so by God is extrinsically impossible due to Hikmah, while it remains within the Qudrah. Some people made a mountain out of that also. If someone knows that beneficiary is using the sold item for genocide, quite clearly, the transaction would be HARAM (albeit, due to an external factor) and Mufti Taqi explicitly said it that if one is sure that him selling weapons or contributing to it shall be used by the enemies or in the civil war, this is *prohibited*. So, I am not sure what's the noise about and why it warrants insinuating that he has gone insane, while he is still the president of Wifaq. I myself don't agree with some of his takes, but I don't get the issue here. As for the second issue, the Fuqaha have mentioned that many times very highly likely is treated as certain. In that case it would be forbidden. Third issue is to also assess if the relative benefit for the Muslims is higher. And fourth one is to also look at the nature of the product, for e.g., direct sale of weapons or something directly convertible to harm is clear as compared to any thing which may end up by many steps being used in a certain way. If someone claims that the later is Haram then there is no limit to such an argument because the very letters and words that I type on internet may contribute to training of AI which may contribute to genocide! That is why classical scholars differentiated between various cases of selling to Ahl ul-Harb, is it a weapon bi-'aynihi, is it iron, is it some commodity? How essential is a commodity? Etc, etc. All these above mentioned factors are to be seen. Mufti Taqi gave a correct principled short answer, completely fine. So once again, the idea that he must go against the fundamentals of fiqh and say that the transaction itself is non-existent (while he is calling it haram) , otherwise, we will call him senile Palantir loving Mufti, is very immature behavior.
Shaykh Taqi Usmani has done his job. Has written excellent books. It’s time for him to retire from this kind of interactions. He is on the road to senility. His English is not that good. His generation does not understand Palantir and its trans humanist agenda. It’s not a stock or a company. It’s Evil incarnate. Example of “halal meat and haram meat” from medieval texts are not going to cut it, most respectfully. I see elderly scholars undoing their great legacies by not retiring on time. Time for his students to come forward and communicate what they have learned with impeccable language skills, and transcending the “contract is valid” trap and see the forest for the trees, and save fiqh before it becomes too late.

Rubbish take. Mufti Taqi is not senile. He's still authoring books and teaching. He has written a translation of the Qur'an that rivals Khattabs & AbdelHaleem's as one of the best ones. Leave fiqh to the fuqaha please. Stay in your lane.

We are disappointed by PM @MarkJCarney’s unequal statement marking 3 years since October 7, 2023. He fully omits Palestinian lives and the proliferation of Israeli bombardment in Gaza since then. The scale of Palestinian suffering left unacknowledged is staggering. STATEMENT➡️ justiceforallcanada.org/stat… @CanadaFP
Three years ago, the terrorist organisation Hamas perpetrated the worst attack against Jewish people since the Holocaust. My statement:

neuroscientists discovered your brain believes whatever you think on repeat, and it doesn't care if it's true.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The cited 2021 paper studied the illusory truth effect: people rate externally repeated statements as more true because they become easier to process. It did not find that the brain automatically believes whatever you think internally on repeat, or that truth is irrelevant. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

The filthiest type of backbiting, states Al-Imām Al-Ghazālī, is when the backbiter says ‘Subḥānallāh’ in order to get the attention of the listeners. Then they say things like “we don’t want to say this, but we are concerned about their (the person who is being backbitten) well-being”, and then they continue with their backbiting. This is the worst type because the backbiter justifies their ‘ghība’ by using Allāh’s name, and they are also lying because if they really cared about the person, they would wake up at night and pray for them instead of exposing their sins (al- ʾArbaʿīn). May Allāh save us from using the religion to justify our spiritual illnesses. Āmīn.

Burning $4,500 per day on this initiative is community malpractice. That kind of money could single-handedly fund a proper Islamic education institute with REAL scholars teaching REAL Islamic knowledge.
Update on Qaf financials: - Usage post launch (to my surprise) is still quite high - Now averaging 35% of launch peak in daily messages - Burning $4,500/day in tokens - Received $250K in cloud credits on Monday - This gives us ~6 weeks before credits run out The immediate priorities are a) roll out monetization to make Qaf sustainable. b) reduce token costs while preserving quality

We’re at a point where it’s vital to recognize that tech bros need to get input from other sectors of society before they develop. It shouldn’t be ‘let’s make it because we can’. The AI and SM industry has been a prime example of this. No consideration for consequences

A man came to Ibn Al-Mubarak and said, "I am a tailor, and sometimes I sew clothes for some of the agents of the Sultan. What do you think, am I considered one of the helpers of oppressors?" Ibn Al-Mubarak (Allah have mercy) replied, "You are not one of the helpers of oppressors. Rather, those who sell you needles and threads are the helpers of oppressors (while you are an oppressor)." One of the best descriptions of Muslim minorities in the West I've ever seen.
Diaspora Islam is survival Islam. It asks: "How do I stay Muslim in a non-Muslim land?" It does not ask: "How do I build a civilization?" It cannot. The conditions prevent it. So the diaspora Muslim bcomes an expert in identity maintenance, halal food,Islamic schools, anti-racism

The problem with Muslim tech bros (and this often applies to engineers too), is that they often have a very strong logical & critical thinking capacity, but little to no knowledge of Islam (or other subjects). The ability to think is not the same as knowing things.

We need a moratorium on Silicon Valley tech bros talking about fiqh at all. This project is flawed from the outset due to a fundamental lack of understanding of how fiqh works. Ulama don’t spend 6 years studying to learn how to conduct a google search.

You can skip the stress, annoyance and extra steps and simply cut the middleman/AI and ask your mufti for your queries. The sublteties in Q's never get old and require clarifications that a machine will not provide. Take it for a spin on talaq or nasab/zina and see for urself

🚨Unbelievable. Imagine if this was any other victim. The man accused of assaulting a Palestinian-Canadian woman wearing hijab at a protest receives an absolute discharge. The judge also dismissed the claim that his assault was racially motivated. Her father had this to say: “We came to this country for one reason ... that we can express ourselves. That we are equal citizens. Today we were told, 'No. You are second-class citizens. You can be assaulted and that's OK.'” Assistant Crown attorney Moiz Karimjee has already filed a notice of appeal, which calls the sentence "demonstrably unfit." Therapy has become incredibly dangerous for societal bonds. In a new study, 1/3 of parents believe their child won’t speak to them because of a therapist’s influence. This is how countries weaken and fall apart. Rome didn’t fall primarily because of barbarians at the gates. It fell because loyalty, duty, bonds, and the birth rate collapsed. When the Romans lost the traditional family, its societal structure that fostered mutual support fell. Therapists are creating a mental health crisis by actively encouraging patients to cut off their families. When communities are no longer connected, they become unrecognizable to their people.

Israel is maniacally bombing Palestinians in tattered tents again tonight. Every. Single. Day. Not a single shot from Hamas for more than 10 months & Israel has killed more than a thousand Palestinians since — including more than 200 children.

Many do not know how much effort John Esposito put into supporting scholars who were in need, be it due to persecution, or just being down on their luck. I know of no other scholar who so frequently went out of his way to assist other scholars. Truly a scholar and a gentleman.
I'm sad to announce that John L. Esposito passed today due to complications from heart surgery. He was 86 years old. John’s humanity and ethical decency reflected the best traditions of the United States and the American people. He demonstrated a deeply empathy for the struggles of the people in the Global South, especially in the Arab-Islamic world. He sought to understand and interpret religious politics not from the perspective of US Empire but rather from the vantage point of the downtrodden, the occupied and the oppressed. His Italian-American background and his strong Catholic roots allowed John to interpret the Islamic tradition from the perspective of similar religious tradition (Catholicism) that had deep historical roots and like Islam today, also struggled to reconcile its normative ethical claims with the demands of modernity. John was an early and courageous scholar who challenged Orientalists misrepresentations of Islam and Muslims. His scholarship created room for understanding in place of prejudice, and his intellectual insights and generosity left a lasting imprint on generations of students and colleagues. In reflecting on John Esposito’s legacy, I’m reminded of an observation by Edmund Burke III. Commenting the work of the late Marshall G.S. Hodgson, author of "The Venture of Islam: Conscience and History of a World Civilization," Burke noted that Hodgson, like Esposito, refused to view Islam as the “other.” Instead, he understood the Islamic tradition as “a venture alongside others that marked human efforts to bring about a just and moral world.” When John retired from Georgetown University, we assembled this short video to honor his legacy. youtube.com/watch?v=dFwdZx4q… @mehdirhasan @jricole @Shanfaraa
