SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I relay the passing of our beloved friend, Felix Haas, who has finally succumbed to a month’s long fight with an infection. For over 5 years, Felix has been a staple of many stream chats, and in my own since May of 2020, scarcely missing a show in all that time, earning the title ‘linkmaster’ due to his fervent commitment to posting campaign links. Felix loved this community, and I get the strong sense that he got a real kick out of seeing people such as myself get a chance to make their dreams happen. I would guess that he took great enjoyment out of being part of that, and he was part of it. A big part. It’s people like Felix, who choose to go so far above and beyond, that make it a joy for me to turn on a live stream and hang out with friends from all over the world. His absence over the last few months has already been deeply felt, and will now be even more sharply felt long into the future. As for me, I will remember the positivity and cheer he exuded on a consistent basis, no matter what was happening at the time. I’ll remember how he used to apologise to me when he missed a show, and how those apologies continued, even as he became deathly ill. They were never necessary, Felix. I’m just so glad to have known you. And while I’ll forever count this a very sad day indeed, in the words of the bard, be sure I count myself in nothing else so happy as in a soul remembering my good friends.
On January 21st I found out my good buddy @TheFelixHaas had passed away. He had been dealing with an undiagnosed infection for quite some time. He spent a few months hoping to recover. He was the most kind & selfless friend I ever had, & he loved spending time with you all 🙏

A timely reminder from Ricky Gervais. Free speech is the right to criticise any ideas including religion. Blasphemy style protections are ludicrous. That an all powerful deity must be protected from having its feelings hurt. Ideas do not have rights! Only people do. Including the right to criticise any belief system without censorship. Offense is the unavoidable price of true freedom. ‘Just because your offended doesn’t mean your right.’

"Groups like Collective Shout, which advocate for content restrictions, are targeting payment processors. This trend is growing, and opposing voices must stay visible."

You never forget your firsts... Way back when, Maverix was THE very first crowdfunded book that made it to my doorstep. (It was technically the second campaign as a Lucent puzzle was the first campaign.) It was the first book that I reviewed for The Splintering thesplintering.com/2021/05/2… It's been more than 4 years in between books. It started as 'help a kid out'; now, he is no longer a kid. There has been growth with him and his art... let's hope he has grown as a storyteller, too (more than the awkward stream stories). P.s. Great start for first impressions with the masking tape! ❤️
