"Democracy Dies in Darkness" Let's talk Natural Gas and a call to action Background -I-2066 which bans the state from banning natural gas was passed by the citizens of WA state -As an important part of this law, the ruling by the unelected Building Code Council (BCC) that essentially banned natural gas in new construction, was overturned -The new law I-2066 takes effect on December 5, 2024 -According to WA law, if there is a conflict between regulation (something created by non elected bureaucrats such as the BCC and a law ie I-2066, then the law prevails) Government Obstruction: - Immediately after the election, the governor of our fine state signaled that he did not support the voice of the people and further he dog whistled his support for a legal challenge to the law -the Building Code Council (BCC) heard the dog whistle and similarly signaled that they didn't think they even needed to amend any of their rules or rulings -today the BCC held a meeting but immediately went into executive session - which means no private affected citizens are allowed to hear what this august group of Inslee appointees discuss on this important topic -The result seems to be they are in no rush to do anything to change the relevant regulations even though the law has changed and goes into effect Dec 5. -this is very similar to the arrogant response of OSPI Chris Reykdal and his refusal to support or implement the new no secrets from parents law I-2081 passed by the legislature. CALL TO ACTION So what can you do about this (and let's get real, if all you do is get angry or frustrated but don't take action, nothing will change. ) So what can you do? 1) Create Awareness - democracy dies in darkness - share this post far and wide 2) Educate Yourself - learn more about this issue - if you look into all the ways the BCC over-regulates our building industry you will begin to understand why WA housing is so expensive. Their website can be found at sbcc.wa.gov The builders association (they are on our side) publishes lots of info as well and they can be found at biaw.com 3) Weigh in with your opinion. this is critical. There is no open meeting right now but when there is, we will try to get a link for you to voice your opinion on how important natural gas energy as a choice is to you and your household. In the meantime you can write a letter to the BCC either in email or snail mail - PLEASE BE POLITE but firm in requesting them to honor the will of the people and to follow the law.
