I finally got around to reading one of my most anticipated crowdfunded comics and it did not disappoint! Fun story! Fun art! As I was reading, I was thinking anyone who loves Kirby, Timm, and Cooke would enjoy this comic then I read this (hilarious) interview in the back.

A quick indie comic review: Squid Williams #1 by @Thompsoncomics
I came across Dan's art on this site and it immediately drew me in. He has that natural, clear, cartoony style that looks like it could have been lifted from a Hanna-Barbera or Bruce Timm cartoon.
Artistically this first issue is a delight. The name of Dan's imprint "Gold Knife" is clearly a tribute to the "Gold Key" comics of the past and, opening Squid Williams, feels like opening a lost comic from the heyday of Gold Key.
The bright, flat color palette, simple, expressive characters, all harken back to the appeal and strength of those comics at their best.
Dan even sprinkles in multiple short comics throughout the issue, keeping in the nautical theme but more gag-driven.
Squid Williams is a story that wouldn't be out of place in the newspapers of the 1930s or 1940s: A one-eyed, two-fisted hero with a moral core gets into close scrapes with pirates and beautiful women. There's a quite a bit of Captain Easy in Squid, which is a good thing.
Often, it seems, that if indie comics have any historical tradition, it starts with the 90s or the 2000s. But comics have been around much longer and there are treasures to be mined going back much further in time. Dan is looking back to a time when comics were bright and bold and telling a new story in an old way.
Highly recommended!

What is the MONSTER ISLAND trilogy?
It's a love letter to the pre-hero Jack Kirby monster stories and the high adventure tales of Roy Crane (Buz Sawyer, Capt. Easy).
In other words, they're comics that EVERYONE can enjoy!

I always try to add some bonus to purchases and commissions. I just printed some small Ginger fanzines to give to those who buy original pages (small format art not included) and reward loyal customers.
