I painted this self portrait from a photograph the New York Post and Daily Mail ran over and over again alongside horrible stories about me. They averaged about 3 stories a day between them for years. The image came from their complete theft of my digital life. In the photograph I am in the worst stretch of my addiction. Exhausted. Contemplating how I could end everything.
They published it over and over because they believed it showed something disturbing, something degenerate, something people would recognize as evidence of whatever they were accusing me of that particular day.
I set out to paint it because I wanted to take back what they were trying to steal from me. It wasn’t just the image they had stolen. They had stolen thousands of images. They wanted to steal my humanity. Their portrait was of a monster. My portrait is of a man being reassembled piece by piece, bit by bit, pixel by pixel through the hard work of recovery.
A portrait of someone worth saving. Someone worth forgiveness. For all of me. Past. Present. Future. Gratitude for all of it.
The images they meant as weapons are no longer weapons to me. The man in them is no longer theirs to describe. He is mine, and I love him.
We do recover.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police arrest a man accused of robbing people of high-value Pokémon cards.
Since March 23, Vancouver Police have responded to five incidents in which victims met with a man to sell Pokémon cards, usually through Facebook Marketplace, a seemingly straightforward transaction gone wrong. Some of the cards can be worth thousands of dollars.
“The suspect would arrange to meet sellers in a public place and, instead of buying the cards, would allegedly use bear spray on the victims, steal the cards, and run off,” said VPD Staff Sergeant Ryan Campbell.
On March 27, Vancouver Police communicated with the suspect online and arranged to sell him Pokémon cards. The suspect was arrested when he showed up.
The investigation is ongoing.
VPD major crime investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-717-2541.
“If you are planning on buying, selling, or trading items with someone you don’t know, use our Safe Exchange Location right outside the front door of our headquarters at 2120 Cambie Street,” said Constable Darren Wong, “It is well-lit and we have monitored security cameras.”

You may have noticed that the temperature around Metro Vancouver during this extreme heat event. It's not as hot as was forecasted. It may feel like we were spared the worst, but it comes at a big cost. Forest Fire Smoke filtering out some of the Sunshine is the reason. But it's high and low-level smoke. Air quality is awful in Metro Vancouver with numbers in the moderate to very high levels the further west you go. So today is again cooler than forecasted, but I can smell and taste the smoke in the air around us. This isn't healthy for anyone. #bcstorm
How many people who had the actual chicken pox as kids still have a scar somewhere? Mine is on my forehead.
