Pamela Whitaker visited Murray Edwards College again this week and today she facilitated a restoring art therapy workshop for our students. Tomorrow we will discuss pedagogies that involve working with textiles and hope to build this into a co-written paper.
Looking forward to the discussion about participatory needlework in our panel at the AAH conference in London tomorrow.

The restoration of one of Parra's arpilleras. Exciting to see but also sad to see how textiles deteriorate.
Aymara textile artist María Susana Choque said teaching traditional Aymara techniques to people from outside the community is like sowing seeds. Maybe one day someone from outside the community will teach the tradition back to an Aymara person who does not know it. (The harvest)
This arpillera by Memorarte captures the feminist sewing movement. The photo was taken at the 5th Memorarte Encuentro de Arte Textil. Look closely and you'll see a certain little person playing in it! The devil design is inspired by a festival in Northern Chile - La Tirana.
Ugandan quilt inspired by @BordadosPuebla These artistic genealogies are meaningful. @rosaborrosa I'm glad to see your work has inspired others to raise their voice and embroider about femicide.

And we see Parra's signature poetic iconography in this arpillera - the singing bird, the lopsided head, the cycle of life. If you are interested in Parra's art, please take a look at my book Violeta Visual Art: Painted Songs (Lorna Dillon, Palgrave 2020)
I recommend the exhibition of Violeta Parra's art in the @Museo_MAC at Quinta Normal in Santiago. Curated by @museovparra I visited with Patricia Vilches to progress our book (under contract with Lexington Books). Had fun brewing ideas and thinking through gaps in Parra research.
CFP We are calling for papers for our AAH panel: This session explores needlework as a
practice, a methodology or an object of study. We dissolve the dichotomy
between individual artists and grass-roots embroiderers or patchwork quilters. forarthistory.org.uk/confere…
The first day of Memorarte's V art and resistance meeting was inspiring. I'm captivated by this piece by the Bordadoras de Villa Frei (Embroiderers of Villa Frei) and also by the embroidered, arpillera-like outfits which contain the same iconography as the arpilleras.
Memorarte´s 5th International Event on Textile art and Resistance will be held in Santiago tomorrow. Come along if you can! There are some great speakers.

This powerful and complex artwork - Hacienda Esclavista (Slave Hacienda) will now go to an exhibition on slavery in the USA. I'm grateful to the Tejedoras de Mampuján for allowing me to exhibit their incredible textile art this year. Gracias @JuanaAliciarui2
I had a sneak preview of Naomi Polonsky's new exhibition and it is beautifully curated. It opens today with a curator talk at 7pm. All welcome. @NaomiPolonsky @TheWomensArt @CambridgeArtScene
