Every year on 25th October I spare a thought for my relative, 622169 Serjeant Arthur Harry Whitman, originally from Ipswich, who served with the 44th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was killed, aged 30, 110 years ago today during the attack on Regina Trench on the Somme. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Vimy Ridge Memorial. However, there is an Unknown Serjeant of the 44th CEF buried in ADANAC Cemetery, and there are only two CEF Serjeants killed that day who have no known grave, so there is a 50% chance that it’s Arthur’s grave. I had searched for a photograph of him for many years with no luck but, a few months ago, responding to a mention of him by me in another FB post, someone sent me a photo of the Serjeants of the 44th CEF taken at Bramshott in 1915 before embarking for France, and Arthur is at the back, third from the left. I know what he looked like at last! Remembering him and all the Canadians who took part in the attack on Regina Trench on 25th October 1916, especially those whose return tickets were never used.
