There’s a very real chance Minnesota cracks the top 5 team shooting seasons in NBA history these next couple of years. They could even be a threat to prime Golden State’s highest mark of 41.6%.
Helluva debut for this new Wolves offense. LaMelo + Ant are going to flirt with peak Splash Bros in 3P volume. Wolves dominated on glass + forced TOVs, too. Heat looked bad. Very little offense outside of Giannis. Poor shooting. Non-Giannis minutes were so bad. Very uninspiring.

Last night was awesome for the Timberwolves. That said, I’m curious to see what this team does for offense when the shot isn’t falling from deep. Minnesota has the shooting talent to lean into the deep ball, but it’s when they can pivot to other things on top of the shooting threat that’s going to really excite me. The bones are there. I think Jaden is very interesting as a short roll option because he can handle, pass, and is lethal from the midrange if you give him a sliver of space. I also think the PnR game could be another option to either get a good look for LaMelo or Rudy or find someone on the perimeter to attack a shifted defense. Really intrigued to see what happens when they face some adversity.

Kuminga did the one thing I was looking for: Absorb the physical 4 matchup. If the Wolves are going to translate to the postseason, they need this from Kuminga. He had a few rough stretches, but it’s mistakes that can be cleaned up with more reps in this system and lineups. Just great to see him win every now and then defensively against a monster like Giannis. That’s not easy to do.
Chris Finch: "Jonathan was phenomenal. In my mind, there was a lot of really good performances, but his sticks out."

Clark is going for payback for the unnecessary effort from the Heat. Jaden tells the heat to chill and then looks at Clark like a proud father. Rudy stands up with a grin. Kuminga walks into the frame with a "Dayum." LaMelo pops up like a whack-a-mole... Yeah, the vibes are high. Timberwolves spoil Giannis' debut with a 25-point blowout at the Kaseya Center.

Anthony Edwards could average 15 3PA per game this season. The scary part is he’s going to make 40% of them.

Good thing the Miami Heat are a one of a kind frontcourt. I’m sure not overreacting to this one.
We knew coming into the season that this kind of front court would be exceedingly tough on the Wolves. Rudy isn’t built to handle these guys on his own.

I think it’s a more subtle fix, make the Supermax count as 30% of the cap like a regular veterans max, but the player still makes 35%. Give teams more ammo to keep their superstar and build around them. The current Supermax can be a burden in the current salary cap environment unless that player is a bona fide MVP candidate each year of the deal. A team getting 5% (8.25 million) back to spread around the rest of the roster while still being able to offer the most money to homegrown talent feels like a sweet spot here. I don’t mind the aprons, they’re effectively a hard cap that a team can push past if they’re confident in their roster. Also, Golden State makes significantly more money than any other team in the league, if you’re serious about parity, you had the level the purchasing power playing field. The Aprons are a compromise that inflicts real punishment for exceeding a certain payroll level, but gives teams the option dip into it to keep their talent.
The NBA needs a "Homegrown Player" exception. Giving teams 10% to 15% salary cap relief on up to two players they drafted or acquired within their first two years. Players still get their full bag, but front offices aren't crippled by the aprons just for keeping their own guys. The new CBA comes out in 2029/30, but teams NBA and NBPA can opt of this a year early in 2028/29. It should be a max of two players per team, saved for your true franchise cornerstones. Make it a 10% discount for regular rookie extensions, bumping up to 15% if they sign a homegrown supermax. This fixes the issue where teams hesitate to hand out supermaxes because of brutal luxury tax penalties. To prevent exploitation, teams have to nominate a player a year in advance as their intended homegrown discount. If a player is traded, the homegrown aspect vanishes instantly. The new team takes on the standard, full cap hit, and the original team has to wait a full year before allocating that slot to someone else. It applies just like standard Bird rights for the home team. Look how much cleaner team-building gets across the league: OKC: 2 of SGA, Chet, or J-Dub Spurs: Wemby, Castle and Harper Magic: Paolo and Franz Rockets: Amen and Sengun Pistons: Cade, Ausar and Duren Plus Dallas, Utah, Denver, Philly, and Toronto all get rewarded. Sure, teams like the Lakers or Knicks who build entirely through trades might not love it. But it stops punishing teams for drafting well and actually incentivizes organic roster building and player development instead of forcing super-teams. Thoughts?

It’ll be interesting to see what figure Donte and Minnesota land on. Minnesota doesn’t have much space, and it’s hard enough to try and retain Kuminga if he proves worthy of a big contract. I’m sure Minnesota is thrilled about how Cody Williams has looked so far. Getting a cheap young player who can contribute at the 3/4 is exactly the life vest Minnesota needs in their cap situation next offseason. Minnesota also has an open roster spot, I’m sure that barring injury need they’ll keep that spot open until the trade deadline. It’ll be tough to swing a deal considering they don’t have much for picks, but they can also take their time to see what options come available in the buyout market post trade deadline. Here’s where Minnesota currently stands on Opening Night in the NBA:

Had a great conversation with @SkoogCole about what to expect in the first week of the season.
in today’s show @TimGarrisonMN & @SkoogCole go over: - Jaden McDaniels contract extension - Is Jaden ready for the all star leap? - What we saw in the pre season - Jonathan Kuminga - Opening week

Translation: He needs in game reps, and a lot of them. There’s going to be ups and downs, but it’s about what he can become by spring, not what he is opening night.
Chris Finch on Joan Beringer via @PAOnTheMic 9 to Noon show: “It might be a 14 minute night, if he’s playing well we might push it to 20-24 minutes to give Rudy a break when needed. It’s all about staying out of foul trouble. He goes after everything which is a great trait but has to temper some of his activity a little bit”

So happy for him. Great deal for the Wolves, too; Jaden will make that $40 million figure a steal by 2029.
Minnesota Timberwolves All-Defense forward Jaden McDaniels has agreed to a one-year, $40 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2029-30 season, agents Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball tell ESPN.

Welp, uncharted territory. For the first time Wolves fans can watch a player whose rights are owned by the team play in college basketball. Curious if he ends up as a two way guy next year with a big season at KU.

Every time Jaylen Clark shoots a three, I find myself personally invested in the shot going in. I’d love to see Clark become reliable from the corner, it would make him such an ideal playoff role player.

This is where it’s going to hurt Minnesota by not having a few 2nd round picks to grease a the wheels of a deal. GG had size and plays with a certain physicality that could fit really well with the bench unit. I feel though it’d take a ton of creativity for the front office to actually pull off. Ultimately, it’s not likely Minnesota can execute this one.
The Grizzlies are looking to trade GG Jackson II and Walter Clayton Jr., per @JakeLFischer “I'm told, however, that the Grizzlies have been exploring potential trade markets for GG Jackson II and Walter Clayton Jr. Which is quite a turn from Memphis' original stance on Clayton.” (Via substack.com/redirect/2/eyJl…)
