I’ll be joining the @BaltimoreBanner next week as a reporter. I’m looking forward to joining an independent outlet that’s been hiring journalists who are accomplished but also adaptable enough to embrace new ways to engage with the communities and beats they cover. I’ll be based in my home county (Montgomery), where The Banner has been making inroads as it builds its brand in the capital region, while its parent nonprofit has expanded its reach by acquiring the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It’s been an interesting,: slightly unnerving—but ultimately really gratifying— period since I resigned from The Baltimore Sun in June over concerns about the paper’s journalism. I’ll never forget the support I received from journalists and readers. My resignation post on X tapped into anxiety over losing independent reporting and voices across the country that many of us once took for granted. We know better now. I start at The Banner on Nov. 2. More here: jeffbarker8.substack.com/p/s…

Recall the 6 children found alone in a filthy home w/o electricity or water yesterday? The family had been put there *by the city* as a crisis placement. Mayor Scott is pledging his "full wrath" for employees involved, reports @emilyopilo & @Tim_Prudente thebanner.com/community/loca…

The noon hour yesterday was my last on air @wbalradio. I amplified this story by The @BaltimoreBanner. Many text messages thanked me for sharing as others offered advice as to how to protect your property. An example of why local journalism matters. thebanner.com/community/loca…

WYPR Radio got rid of local shows Midday & On the Record. WMAR TV switched to newscasts without anchors. Now WBAL Radio is dropping local hosts TJ Smith & Angelette Aviles. All in all, not good for the news/info/opinion ecosystem in greater Baltimore. thebanner.com/community/loca…

The wealth gap between members of Congress and their constituents is most glaring in Md's 6th District race, where two millionaires (billionaires?) from D.C. suburbs want to represent some of the poorest, rural parts of Western Maryland. By @WintrodeBrenda thebanner.com/politics-power…
