Very proud of my mum, who has won re-election for the second time as an independent councillor in North Tyneside. No party machine, just really hard work on behalf of her residents year-round - as seen in the fact that her vote and % share went up despite more parties standing.

🇬🇧 Energy bills did not used to be cripplingly high. Houses did not used to be this expensive. Childcare used to be more financially manageable.
So when did life in Britain become so unaffordable?

Why is the electorate so boiling with rage at the political class? This line from @szupingc and @Tim_Wallace's piece on the new economic forecasts feels like a key reason.
"By the end of this decade, workers’ real-terms hourly pay – adjusted for inflation – will still be 0.5% below its 2009-10 level. That’s more than two lost decades of growth."

💸 "Even a bond market-friendly Budget may not be enough to save the Chancellor"
Could Rachel Reeves' budget be her last? The Chancellor’s challenge is to satisfy both the bond market and Labour backbenchers

I’d prescribe a strong scotch after reading this. I’d not heard before the idea that we are not so much an emerging economy as a submerging one..
There is a rather wretched feeling about the UK economy. Good to chat with @szupingc and @Tim_Wallace. But you may need a strong coffee before reading the piece.
We desperately need a plan...please.

The govt actually have commissioned and funded six new prisons, but guess what?
Planning appeals and badgers have prevented us actually building them. We have legalised crime to avoid upsetting NIMBYs.

I asked on Tuesday: if police fear protesters will turn violent if the law is upheld, why defer to that violent threat?
Now, shockingly, @metpoliceuk officers silence @antisemitism campaigners’ legitimate speech for fear of violent attack.
What behaviour gets privileged here?

And in literally the very next line in the OBR release we get the full picture: "Once the incentive is withdrawn, investment is assumed to be lower than would otherwise have been." If temporary it will not "affect the level of investment and the capital stock in the longer term"
The Super-Deduction is the biggest business tax cut in modern British history and today the @OBR_UK has said it is working.
Business investment is now 10% higher than it would have been had the relief not have been in place.
