RIP Jason Arday. I never met you, never knew you and what I read of your work I found unimpressive. And yet I feel a sadness and loss at your death. You never deserved for it to end this way. You were used and even abused by others for their own ends. I do not believe you were in any way a bad person. Indeed there are many reasons to believe you were a good person. You needed help. Yet when you needed help it never came. Despite the huge pile on, nobody seemed to be there for you. You were left to die on your own, which only adds to the sadness. RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by those who had a duty of care towards you.

Wu Chi-wai (胡志偉), a former leader of the main Hong Kong opposition Democratic Party, has been detained at 🇬🇧 Heathrow airport and told he is to be deported. Wu, who was also a legislative councillor, the territory’s equivalent of an MP, for 8 years, arrived in Britain to seek asylum. He was released from prison in Hong Kong earlier this year after serving 4 years for “subversion” under the territory’s new, Beijing-imposed national security laws. I’ve written to every Member of Parliament today. Proposals before Parliament would remove jury trials from offences carrying up to three years in prison. Freedoms rarely vanish overnight. They are chipped away in the name of efficiency. Juries did not cause the crisis in our courts. Removing them will not fix it. When the state seeks to take someone’s liberty for serious offences, the judgment of ordinary citizens should never be optional. This is close to becoming law. Please read the letter. Law enforcement are supposed to make public order decisions on the basis of credible evidence. Whether you consider yourself pro-Palestine, pro-Israel or both, that is a reasonable expectation. Yet Netherlands police has told us the secret "intelligence" used by West Mid Police to justify the ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans last month includes claims that are wholly "untrue", inaccurate or meaningless. In some instances, the force appears to have inverted reality - claiming that, during disorder in Amsterdam in 2024, Israeli fans chucked  innocent members of the public into "the river". Dutch police say the one incident they are familiar with involved a fan in a canal being told to say Free Palestine in order to be freed. West Mids say 5,000 officers had to be deployed. Dutch police say the true figure is 1,200. West Mids say 600 people "intentionally targeted Muslim communities". Dutch police they do not collect such figures. West Mids say 200 fans were "linked" to the IDF. Dutch police do not know what that could even mean in context. As I report, in Amsterdam, Israeli fans were filmed ripping Palestine flags off buildings and calling on death to Arabs before the "Jew hunt" spiralled out of control. The reality is that there is more than enough racism and hooliganism within the Maccabi fan base to argue they are "high-risk" without making things up. Yet that is what West Mids appear to have done. Worse still, Britain's second largest police force is refusing to explain why. Our report below.
