夫が出張で家を空けた金曜日の夜、私は向かいの部屋に住む男性から、思いがけない言葉をかけられた。
「今夜、一人ですか？」
彼の名前は圭介。三十五歳で、半年前にこのマンションへ引っ越してきた独身男性だった。
エレベーターで顔を合わせれば挨拶する程度の関係だったが、雨の日に傘を貸してもらって以来、少しずつ話すようになった。
その夜、私はコンビニの袋を抱えて帰宅した。玄関前で鍵を探していると、圭介が隣のドアから出てきた。
「夕飯、まだですよね？」
「どうしてわかるんですか？」
「いつもなら、もっと早く帰っているから」
そんなことまで見られていたのかと思い、私は思わず笑った。
彼は小さな紙袋を差し出した。中には、近所の店で買ったケーキが二つ入っていた。
「よかったら、一緒に食べませんか。もちろん、嫌なら断ってください」
私は少し迷った。
夫とは最近、まともに会話をしていなかった。仕事から帰れば食事を済ませ、スマートフォンを見ながら眠る。私が寂しさを口にしても、彼はいつも忙しいと言うだけだった。
それでも、他の男性の部屋へ行く理由にはならない。
「ここでいただきます。ありがとう」
私がそう答えると、圭介は残念そうな顔をせず、穏やかに笑った。
「わかりました。おやすみなさい」
その潔さが、なぜか心に残った。
翌週、夫から帰宅が遅くなると連絡があった。
私は仕事帰りにマンションの下で圭介と会った。彼は私の顔を見るなり、足を止めた。
「何かありました？」
「どうして？」
「今日は、無理して笑っている気がするから」
その言葉を聞いた瞬間、胸の奥が痛くなった。
誰にも気づかれないと思っていた寂しさを、ほとんど知らない男性に見抜かれたのだ。
「私、そんな顔をしていました？」
「少しだけ」
彼はそれ以上、何も聞かなかった。
別れ際、私は思わず彼を呼び止めた。
「圭介さん。今度、ケーキのお礼をさせてください」
彼は驚いたあと、静かにうなずいた。
「楽しみにしています」
その夜、夫のスマートフォンに女性からメッセージが届いた。
画面に表示された名前を見て、私は息をのんだ。
そこには、私の知らない女性の名前と、こんな一文があった。
「次はいつ会える？ 奥さんには、まだ言わないでね」

He doesn't just fight on it, he fights _with_ it. He swings from the monkey bars to dodge a pipe, slides down the slide to kick two guys at once, uses the seesaw to launch an attacker, wraps himself around the poles so they can't corner him.
The whole fight is him turning every bar, chain, and platform into a shield or a spring.
One second he's hanging upside down like a kid playing, the next second a pipe whistles past his head and you remember one wrong move and his skull cracks.
That's classic Jackie — he makes you laugh so you don't notice how close he is to dying. No wires, no doubles, no mats. Just a man in his prime making a playground, the safest place in the world, look like the most dangerous place to have a fight.
