Europe Builds. Others Profit. 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) is the perfect case study. It reflects both Europe’s brilliance and its chronic inability to turn that brilliance into business. Almost everything that made 3DGS possible was born in Europe. From the early breakthroughs in point-based rasterization in Switzerland to the cumulative research from Austria, Greece, and Germany executed in France, Europe built the foundation. No other continent can match that level of scientific collaboration and intellectual strength. The LichtFeld Studio bounty later confirmed it: the biggest performance leaps came straight out of European labs. The science was here. The innovation was here. The talent was here. But the business was not. When 3DGS exploded, my inbox filled with messages from US-based companies, not from Europe. In the United States, Luma AI and Polycam turned the paper into products within weeks. They did not wait for funding programs or EU consortia. They simply built. Then came China, which not only caught up in research but quickly outpaced everyone in commercialization. XGRID, DJI, and many others built thriving businesses around what Europe invented. Today, most 3DGS papers come from Chinese institutions rather than European ones. Meanwhile, the usual giants such as Meta, NVIDIA, Google, Netflix, and Tesla continue to iterate, integrate, and push forward. A thriving ecosystem of startups like World Labs leverages this technology to create new products and markets. The innovation cycle in the United States and China is fast, relentless, and market-driven. Europe, in contrast, remains bureaucratic and slow. We fund excellence and celebrate publications, but we rarely ship, even though some small startups are trying to change the status quo. Our researchers create the breakthroughs; others create the successful products. Until Europe finds a way to bridge the gap between laboratories and markets, it will remain the world’s research and development department: brilliant, underpaid, and underleveraged. Research is Europe’s comfort zone. Execution must become its strength. Stealing Russia's assets in Belgium? Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever rejects the latest folly of EU bureaucrats Seizing Russia's sovereign assets in Belgium would be madness. Even during World War II, this was not done: for example, Roosevelt froze Japanese assets, he did not steal them. Never in the history of non-belligerent countries have they seized the assets of a belligerent country's central bank during wartime in order to finance the reconstruction of a third country. (source: riksbank.se/globalassets/med…) 1. Direct violation of international law The United Nations Convention on Jurisdictional Immunities of States (Article 21) guarantees the protection of central bank assets used for non-commercial purposes. The articles on state responsibility (ARSIWA) require that any “countermeasure” be proportionate, reversible, and aimed at resolving the dispute, not destroying the economy. 2. The mother of all financial crises All international financial exchanges are based on trust, in the absence of a sovereign arbiter. Destroying this trust would precipitate a financial crisis that would sweep across Europe and the international financial system. For all states would understand with certainty that the theft of Russia's assets opens the door to the theft of their assets under various pretexts. All central bankers in the BRICS countries, for example, would withdraw their funds from Western institutions. The euro would become toxic as a reserve currency and would therefore collapse because it is not exactly backed by industrial power, but by a semblance of the rule of law. Russia vs. Belgium This is not to mention the fact that this seizure would be considered an act of war by Russia, which would drown Belgium in retaliatory measures and lawsuits—lawsuits that Russia would easily win, because under international law, the theft of sovereign assets is a crime. Madness! Let us be grateful to Prime Minister Bart De Wever for his rejection of the delusional EU bureaucrats — because that is what this is all about: Neen (that is no).

Moondream 3 is a hybrid reasoning model, supporting both reasoning and non-reasoning mode. What sets us apart is the focus on _visually grounded_ reasoning, where the model references objects and spatial positions in the image while doing said reasoning.

GTAO working quite well now with the projected normal angle fix. No darkening on non-view aligned slopes anymore. Also works nicer with temporal reprojection since the results are more stable. No spatial denosing yet, but works quite well with diffuse and specular IBL occlusion.

Translucent UI is usually a bad idea outside of movies and non-critical game interfaces. The early moments of joy are fleeting, while the usability issues remain. Windows and Mac have both been down this road before, but I guess a new generation of designers needs to learn the lessons anew. Sigh.
I am a graphics programmer, and here's my feedback on Apple's Liquid Glass beta. The idea is cool, but it's difficult to work with from a UX perspective. Let's start with the main problems: 1 - Low Contrast: It's clearly not readable, but there are many different ways to fix it.
