Good news on spherical tokamak performance was announced at the @APSphysics Plasma Physics conference. Initial analysis of results on our ST40 spherical tokamak indicates energy confinement increases more rapidly with magnetic field than would be expected with the ITER scaling used for conventional tokamaks. This is an important finding as we scale-up to the next generation of #fusion pilot plants.

Our ST40 spherical tokamak is the most advanced of its kind in the world. With our 2024 #plasma #physics campaign well underway, Plasma Operations Group Lead, Otto Asunta, looks at our achievements with ST40 so far and objectives for the year, including maximising our ‘triple product’; a key measure of progress on the path to realising commercial #fusion conditions.
Our work with ST40 is building the confidence, understanding and technology that supports the spherical tokamak as the optimal route to clean, affordable and globally deployable #fusionenergy ⚡
