A 20-year study found the average expert predicted the future about as well as a dart-throwing chimpanzee. Superforecasting by Philip Tetlock and Dan Gardner shows what the few people who actually can predict do differently. Tetlock tracked 284 experts making about 28,000 predictions. The famous ones did worse than the unknown ones. Then the US intelligence community ran a forecasting tournament, and Tetlock entered with thousands of ordinary volunteers. The best of them beat professional analysts who had access to classified information. What set them apart wasnβt IQ or credentials. They broke big questions into small ones. They thought in percentages instead of yes or no. They changed their minds often, in small steps. And they kept score. Everyone makes predictions every day about money, jobs and people. This is the best book there is on making better ones.
π Retrospectively following this, so while I'm not under pressure to keep up with a book club, I am instead under pressure because my wife has added it to the Netflix watch list. π€¦ββοΈ

Not for me.
I think I've resolved to only read anything from mid-C20 onwards. Not sure if it's something around a change in psyche post 2x world wars, great depression, etc, but I just cannot recognise anything from classics of prior centuries.
Maybe I'm just a philistine.

Oh, and Mason Greenwood is a rat. π
Something that I think is drastically undervalued is the rarity of reliable, dependable people.
I see this, constantly, in all walks of life.
What's worse, is that those who are reliable & dependable don't get any reward for it; quite the opposite, they get shat on.
π For the first time, I've subscribed to a Substack; and, for the first time, am reading this while trying to keep up with the book club, in order to deepen my understanding and reflections.
"If you dare to try to be a positively good man...you're going to be seen as an idiot."
This is a significant one... our next book club read has been decided:
Dostoevsky's "The Idiot".
This is a tremendously powerful novel and one of Dostoevsky's great works. An excellent one for us to tackle together.
We'll be reading it over the next 6-7 weeks, and discussing it in three parts:
β’ Session 1 (Sep 23) β Part 1
β’ Session 2 (Oct 7) β Part 2 + Part 3, ch. 1-6
β’ Session 3 (Oct 21) β Part 3, ch. 7-conclusion
Along the way, we'll send out reading guides for the parts in question. You can read along with us for free and tune into the live broadcasts.
If you'd like to join our inner circle and participate in the discussions directly, join us with a paid membership. You'll get:
β’ Live book club discussions (biweekly)
β’ Access to our community chat
β’ Essays to guide you through the great books
β’ All past recordings, essays, and podcasts
β’ Ability to vote on what we read next

Down a rabbit hole with this trend - mine looks like hell & makes me question my existence!
Why the fuck is there a giant Boston Matrix in the sky?! And who's taking all those midrange?

Everyone on the bench when someone jacks up a terrible shot and I go "nope"...just before it swishes.
And...
Everyone on the bench when the opponent's 40% FT shooter goes 2-2, but the scout said FOUL.
I read in themes; and this, I fear, is the start of my mid-life crisis theme!
My understanding is that it may speak to my life's overstory, my affliction: always try to do the right thing, get nothing in return, no breaks.
Hence I wonder if, indeed, I am The Idiot.
