At 6:29 AM (Israel time), the exact time Hamas launched its attack three years ago on October 7, 2023, ceremonies were held across the country and flags were lowered in memory of the victims.
Three years after Hamas launched the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust, Israel has released the full toll of the war it calls "Iron Swords."
1,029 civilians murdered - including 63 children and teenagers, and 88 foreign nationals. 778 of them were murdered on October 7, 2023, itself. 1,318 members of Israel's security forces have fallen since the war began.
But the numbers go far beyond the dead.
More than 7,150 families have joined Israel's bereaved since the war began - 2,143 bereaved parents, 355 widows, 880 orphans, and 3,772 brothers and sisters who lost a sibling. Over 43,000 civilians have filed for disability recognition - the vast majority for psychological injury.
The 251 hostages taken on October 7, 2023, have all returned home, including 154 civilians who returned alive and 62 civilians who were returned in coffins.
These are not statistics. These are families. These are lives. These are three years of a nation fighting to survive - and paying an unimaginable price to do so.
We remember every name. We mourn every family. 🇮🇱🕯️

Kato and Miklos Bernath were childhood sweethearts in Szikso, Hungary, when the Nazis ravished their world. Miklos became a partisan, Kato a slave laborer. Miklos was captured and starved, Kato was sent to be murdered in Auschwitz.
But against all odds, they did not die.
After liberation, they returned to Szikso and discovered each other alive - though most of their families had been massacred. They wed, and their first child, a boy, was born a month early in a DP camp in Germany. He survived and was named after Miklos' murdered father and brother.
That boy grew up, became a doctor in America, married, and raised two daughters.
One of them is writing this post.

Today, we remember of the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered in the Holocaust.
As the world commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day and marks the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, we must re-dedicate ourselves to fighting surging antisemitism today - in action, not just words.
Never again must mean never again.

Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance Day.
And if you’ve never heard of Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, it’s time you did.
Captured during WWII. Thrown into a Nazi POW camp with over 1,200 fellow Americans, 200 of them Jewish.
One day, the Nazis gave an order:
“All Jewish soldiers, step forward.”
Edmonds gave a different order:
“Everyone fall out.”
All 1,200 stood shoulder to shoulder.
The Nazi commandant lost it.
Stormed over. Pulled a pistol. Pressed it to Edmonds’ forehead.
“Identify the Jews or I’ll shoot you.”
Edmonds didn’t blink.
“We are all Jews here.
If you shoot me, you’ll have to shoot us all.
And when we win this war, you’ll be tried for war crimes.”
The Nazi backed down.
Two hundred Jewish-American lives were saved.
Edmonds never told a soul.
Not for credit. Not for medals. Not even to his own son.
He didn’t want to be a hero.
He just wanted to do what was right.
Let the world never forget his courage.
Let his words echo forever.
We are all Jews here.

Today at 5:30, after 844 days, the clock at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv will finally stop counting.
It took over 20,200 hours, more than 1.2 million minutes, and around 73 million seconds, but all the hostages are finally home.
Now Israel can begin to heal.

The Nazis tried to erase my great grandmother and her entire family. They nearly succeeded in Auschwitz, but she survived.
Today at Buckingham Palace, on Holocaust Memorial Day, it was an honour to be with Their Majesties and see her portrait in the permanent collection.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In memory of 6,000,000 who were murdered solely because they were Jewish.
Never Again.

Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I’m thinking of my grandfather, who was born in Germany and would have been sent to the death camps had he not left in 1936 to help reestablish the State of Israel.
When I went back to Germany, to see where he was from, I met Konrad Kutt, a non-Jewish Berliner and educator who built a street library to teach about Jewish life and Holocaust history.
He told me that it was destroyed in an antisemitic attack, but that he rebuilt it anyway. This is how remembrance survives, through people who refuse to let hate win.

Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the 6 million Jewish men, women, and children, and millions more, who were murdered at the hands of the Nazis.
To commemorate the Holocaust and its victims, we must speak out against antisemitism and other forms of bigotry today. In the face of darkness, be the light.

BREAKING: Beth Israel Synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi 🇺🇸, the city’s only synagogue, was set on fire during Shabbat.
Two Torah scrolls were destroyed. Five more were damaged.
And it’s impossible to ignore the history: this is the same synagogue that was bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967 because its rabbi supported the Civil Rights Movement.
Different decade. Same hate.
