This is the defining high-level stat for NC State's defense the last 2 years. Truly, it hasn't been terrible on a down-to-down basis, but it gives up a lot of explosive plays.
How Often Does Your Defense Allow Explosive Plays?

Lack of pass rush enables offenses to manipulate space and leverage at the top of the defense with shot concepts like mills, yankee, cross country, etc where you're creating safety conflict. Speeding up the time to throw often eliminates the deepest routes there.

State also hasn't been a great tackling team in the run game. See: Louisville, UVA last year, so on. It's using some good early down pressures against the run (see: WF) but if you funnel the ball to someone, they have to make the tackle.

Couple more examples of State using early down pressures. Blitzing the A gap to the RB side and spinning to cover 3 behind it. Back outruns the penetration here but good stuff from Isaiah Shirley and Brody Barnhardt.

Same deal. Penetration cuts off the back's path and forces the ball to the unblocked edge. Edge is a beat late so it shakes free. A gap blitz does its job though. Prevents the stretch play from stretching.

Wake's schematic adjustment later in the game. Another gun run. A gap blitz with spin to cover 3 from State. Deacs run iso. Doesn't look real good. Falls apart. But just a neat look at some game within the game stuff.

Anthony Goins was a key piece in building the UGA offense last year, and he'll be a key piece of NC State's offense in 2026. Learn about some of the base concepts, ways they attack, and how State's roster fits into all of it. trinityroadtimes.com/p/get-t…

Adams the biggest wild card on the roster. Was so inefficient in a tough spot last year but has some contact finishing and historical shooting touch. Could bring some legit three-level scoring and initiation in the best case scenario.
