On this day in 1965, a Marine and his very young wife were traveling in a Rambler wagon. Just across the border near Brownsville, TX , she cries out in pain around 1am. A child is coming 6 wks early. The Marine pulls over on Avenida Álvaro Obregón, and helps calm the young Cherokee mother to be. Within 30 minutes, a son is born. He waits to see if the child is going to be ok. He decides he is good to go and and in haste gets back behind the wheel. Making the journey back to Ft Hood to have his son checked in at the freshly constructed Darnal Army Hospital, opened 6 months earlier. 10 hr later , his son and wife is admitted. The doctor clears the new mom but the son is having breathing problems. He's 6 wks early and has respiratory distress. The cause of the early birth remains a mystery. 17 years later , the son enlists into the Army, having been athletic most of his childhood to overcome his birthing circumstance , he takes on all physical tasks with ease.
