ALT In communicating with your supervisor about writing, it is helpful to define the terms you use and to ask your supervisor to define terms he or she uses. Terms like ‘revise’ and ‘expand’, for example, will be more helpful if you know the scale, scope and purpose of the revisions. The criteria for good/bad writing, yours and your supervisor’s, are almost bound to be diverse, even dynamic and possibly ‘indeterminate’. Such a fluid state can lead to frustrating discussions. If terms are left undefined, there is every chance that you will end up talking at cross-purposes. Definition should obviously be a topic for discussion, but think through your own ideas first, so that you can put them across clearly. Generating a few of your own definitions will, in itself, lead you to develop your understanding of writing. ALT The dissertation prospectus provides a preliminary overview of your research problem and the methodology. An example of a prospectus is attached below. Although many students do not bother with a prospectus, experience suggests that it is a very useful step in the process. First, it enables you to bring together and systematize all the preliminary work you have done so far. More important, it enables your committee to give you substantive input with respect to your problem and methodology before you write the formal proposal. Many students have spent months developing a proposal, only to find that the committee had different ideas about the problem or the methodology. The prospectus usually includes three elements: 1. Research topic and research problem 2. Methodology 3.
