"If you want to stay at Texas, you might as well quit football"
Those words hit Zac Swanson like a gut punch. His sister, Lainey, heard a similar message at TCU years later.
Both leaned on their father, whose NFL career was defined by rejection.
From me, for @CronkiteSportsâŹď¸
ASU Football: Rejection has been a recurring theme for the Swanson household. From Pete Swanson going undrafted in 1997 to Zac Swanson's departure from Texas, the family's story is one of navigating setbacks.

ASU Football: A duel between two backup quarterbacks turned into a four-QB game. Kansas State's Jacob Knuth made his first career start, and three Sun Devils saw action in a 28-17 win, including first-year Jake Fette.

FINAL: ASU 28, KSU 17
Cardae Mackâs four touchdowns get the Sun Devils their fourth win.

There's a very notable, but understandable, difference in how the student section responds when Cutter Boley and Jake Fette are sacked on third down.
@CronkiteSports
Jake Fetteâs first pass is a first-down conversion to Reed Harris.
âFetteâ chants are heard in the student section.

Jake Fette is now in at quarterback for Arizona State.

Cutter Boley is sacked on the final play of the half. Boos are heard from the student section.
ASU 14, KSU 10

Mikey Keene went down on the field. He was helped up and assisted to the sideline.
Cutter Boley is warming up, fans are changing âwe want Fette!â
@CronkiteSports
This wasâŚquite the incompletion.
ASU gets a third down stop. 14-10 with 1:13 left in the half.
@CronkiteSports
ASU has 24 rushing yards with around 14 minutes left in the first half.
Closer to matching it's 35 last week against Texas Tech.
@CronkiteSports
There's less than a minute left to go in the first quarter.
Reed Harris has 116 yards.
@CronkiteSports
The timing was off on that Mikey Keene 2nd down target to Derek Euseubio. It ends up being a drive killer but ASU downs the following punt at Kansas State's one.
@CronkiteSports
8:38 1st | The Sun Devils respond with an explosive first drive. Mikey Keene delivered a perfect strike to Reed Harris on his first throw of the game then found him for another first down later.
Four plays, 77 yards
@CronkiteSports
Kansas State came into this game with the second-most efficient run game in the nation, averaging 6.2 yards/carry.
On that drive, without leading rusher Avery Johnson, the Wildcats ran for 43 on 5 carries (8.6 YPC)
Knuth capped the drive off with a TD pass.
@CronkiteSports
A decent amount of Kansas State purple is in the stands here at Mountain America Stadium

Here at Mountain America Stadium where Arizona State (3-3, 1-2 Big 12) welcomes Kansas State (4-2, 1-2)
Itâs a battle of the backups this week, as Mikey Keene takes on Jacob Knuth, whoâs in for the injured Avery Johnson
